I've have just finished upgrading my computer. After using for a few weeks it has started to smell like something is burning. I just bought a new powersupply, cpu, motherboard, and an AMD heatsink & fan that came with the cpu. I pull out my heatsink and toook a look. All I notice is that the heatsink glue at the bottom has a small square missing from where the cpu touches the heatsink. Is that right, I've never had that happen before, but I used to put on my own thermal paste. I look at the cpu and system temp. and sys. temp is 22 degrees and the cpu temp won't climb any higher than 42. Should I put some thermal paste on?

Thanks

clean the heatsink, and get some artic silver 2. The temps seem fine. Are they under full load or idle? Also, what board do you ahve and how are u monitoring it? is it hte back side of the cpu? the actual core?

Temps seem ok tho. Just to be safe get some artic silver 2 or artic alumina.

Hi!

What you are talking about is that the glue (thermal pad) that was on the CPU bottom has melted (this is called phase-change) and has entered all the micro valeys that exist between the CPU and HSF. This efect is normal. If you get the HSF off the CPU then it will look like the contact zone has very (almoust invisible) thermal pad there. Nothing unusual thought.
But if you try to put the HSF back on you will be in trouble: the thermal pad can only be used once. Once you get it off the contact will never be the same and the temps will rise.

So get off the HSF, and try to remove the remains of the thermal pad. I used some rubber to get all the remains off. And you can use alcohol too to finish the job (on both CPU and HSF).

Put some thin layer of AS or silicon paste and reinstall the HSF.

About the burning smell: Try to locate it. It can be the Monitor or the PSU overheating. I do thing that if you burn the CPU untill you can smell it it will survive.

Ehat PSU are you using? Whats your config anyway?

So do put thermal paste.

Jerboy: Are you making fun of me? :)

I used rubber to get the most of the thermal pad off. And finished with acohol or nail polish remover.
If I remember corectly rubber also make wonders on cleaning up ArcticSilver. At least I used it successfuly for that purpose. In 5 minutes I cleaned up my CPU. I purchased my Athlon second hand and it was full of ArcticSilver... I tried nail polish remover but working with it was very slow...

With the same rubber you can clean the pencil traces from the L1 bridges...

Are you having problems with your rubber ? :)

hmmm maybe I'll lube up with Arctic Silver II(silver fortified silicone lube). Somebody is going to get really pissed about having Arctic Silver all over their body. Seriously, why the fvck do you use condoms to clean CPU?

Acetone does not dissolve silicone grease. AS II is silver particles suspended in silicone. Use some halogenated solvents. Wipes off like magic.

Maybe I made a mistake, but RUBBER does not mean condom in my dictionary. Condoms are made from rubber but kids also use rubber at school to clean of their pencil mistakes. I do not know how to explain it better (I'm not an english/american person).

Maybe "rubber gum"?

But I guess condoms work well to for cleaning ArcticSilver too :)
