Help, is laptop dead?

Hello everyone. i think i broke my sister's laptop and i would like to know whats going to happen. Yesterday, i was doing my homework, decided to take a break and just close the lid to the laptop. the comp goes to standby and shuts lcd/hd off. when i lefted the lid back up and continue to work later, the lcd refuse to come on. it appears the lcd is dead, but the odd thing is that if you look very carefully and closely, you can see that it is actually on, but very very very dark. sooooooooo dark that all you can make out is like outlines. i guess that rules out connection? does this occur offten with lcd's? its not vid card either cuz i plugged my regular crt montior to the laptop and it works fine. just lcd is whacked. anyways, had this baby for about 6months, going to probably return since its still under warrenty. my question though, what are they mostly likely going to do? just replace lcd or replacement? just wanna make sure if i need to backup things before shipping off. its a KDS laptop at 1ghz.

P.S. should i worry and delete certian programs,........... you know........ like all my other programs besides the windows that came with it.

You probbably broke/burned out the CCFL - Cold Cathode Flouresent Light.

Basically a while light tube to illuminate the tft. I've heard of some serious modding freaks replace them, but pretty much the only practical way is to replace the LCD portion entirely.

Heh haven't had to deal with KDS but I've heard bad things about their warranty/service and such. I wouldn't worry about any programs on it as if they replace it they will give you one with a fresh install of everything. And probbably format the old drive without any looking around.
