My 9800 Radeon has overheated my CPU to the extent of 86 C!~!!!!!!! Not good. I know it's the card...when it's in my system because even when i tried my FX 5200 Ultra the temperatures were Fine. Anyone having a similar overheating problem with their Radeon's. I tried another (my uncles) and it runs fine in my PC also. My card runs fine too just that for some reason it's saying that my CPU temps are off the roof and always beeps.

Here are my specs:

AMD Athlon 2600+ Barton (Running Stock) w/ Tt Silent Boost
Aopen AK79D-400VN (Nforce 2 Ultra 400 chipset)
Corsair XMS 512 PC3200 w/heatsinks
ATI Radeon 9800 (reading as a Pro with 3.9cats)
Creative Audigy 2
WD 40gig
WD 20gig
400WATT PSU

Extras:
I have an extra 30mm fan blowing out the hot air forming between the radeon and cpu
1 80mm case fan blowing air into the system from the front
Full Tower 6bay Rom...2 bay Floppy
Not much cooling but for my CPU to be going crazy do you think it could be the Radeon????

Thanks a bunch.
Matt

Just out of curiosity, why would a video card affect the temperature of a cpu? I've never heard of that before.

Well, the 9800 does run very hot and if circulation within the case was not good, the card could technically raise the ambient temps within the case. Still, it wouldn't be such leap though (maybe 2-3C under very conditions). Personally, I think the CPU heatsink got jarred loose during the installation of the card.

Do you suggest me taking of the HSF of the CPU and putting it back on once i clean it off...and add some Artic Silver 5? The thing is...i can touch the HSF without feeling any significant heat. And to add more info: When I put the FX 5200Ultra card in the CPU temps drop to 40C on a good load. So i doubt it's the CPU Hsf. My unlce/technician is stopping by tomorrow with another 9800 and Windows XP Pro...we're going to try everything!!! lol.

If only the FX 5200Ultra was a decent card...I'd just leave it in...but I got the PNY version and it sucks at lighting.

Any other guesses? Could help and save me time

If the heatsink's not hot, something's very wrong. If it's not hot, that means that the heatsink's not contacting the processor - no heat is being transferred from the core to the heatsink. Re-install the heatsink, and make very sure it's contacting the CPU core properly. 86C is near the maximum rated core temp of 90C, and 86C may only be the temp that is being read by the motherboard's thermistor - if so, the actual core temp is much higher. I've never seen a reported temp of 86C; usually when it hits that, the processor is in the process of being fried to death.

Ok...I'm going to check tomorrow. Tomorrow Is the trouble shoot day. Have some guys coming. Bringing another ATI Radeon 9800 and Software if we have to redo the OS. Now with the HSF...I've reported and have taken a screenshot of higher temps than just 86C lol. 127C is the highest so far which i took a screenshot of last night and saved for reference. CPU HSF is not burnable to the touch either. So that means i can touch the hsf which is copper and not get burned at ALL!!! But if you want to see these screenshot just AIM me with AIM instant messanger. I can send them, over a 5.0MBps cable line. The quicker the better.

Thanks for reading the thread...but a Athlon melts at 97C...if my Thermoter on the mobo was reading cpu temps at 127 for about 3 seconds after minimizing Americas Army (a game) then why isn't my cpu gone with the wind?

-Matt My aim Instant messaner is ReptileMatt1986 if anyone wants to see these screenshot.

Also: If the HSF isn't on properly then why is it that when i put my FX 5200Ultra in the machine...the temps are in 35-43C region? and a MAX of 54C with full load after 3Mark tests etc???? I don't think it's the HSF of the CPU otherwise at 127C i wouldn't be speaking on the forum with my computer no more lol.

check the HSF of the 9800 card. that is what everyone has meant so far. the HSF of the 9800 should be very warm to touch. look at the card from the side. the bottom of the HSF and the core should have close contact.

to make sure, try to take off the HSF, repaste and reattach it back on.

Ok...is it worth taking of the HSF of the Radeon 9800 and adding some Artic Silver 5 when placed back on? I just took out the card few minutes ago and it looks fairly low to the PCB. Also I'm not as worried about my card as I am my CPU lol. So is there anyway we can say it could just be a glitch in software and a nice clean OS is need to fix the problem OR is that unheard of?

OK, something is definately up. Ignore my earlier post, I misread your problem. Could u clear a few things up plz.

Does your PC freeze in any way when playing graphically intensive games using the 9800?
Does your PC freeze in windows while doing something streesful, lets say while compressing a few files for a few minutes?
The temps you are reporting - are these from the BIOS? If not, plz could you report these? Otherwise which utility are you using?

I am guessing it is some sort of problem reporting the CPU temperatures and a possible glitch in the BIOS that reports these readings. Could I also ask that you also try to search the nforcehq aopen forum for any similar problems.

Hope this helps.

My Pc froze Twice so far, not playing games...actually it was when i tried reading an audio cd and opening the files with Audigy 2 Media Source Player. Another time I can't remember (sorry). I'm using EZ clock as my windows utility since it came with my motherboard...and when i check the temps in bios they are still high at 50 C!! My PC hasn't froze yet playing Games. Play everything high with smooth framerates. Halo Pc..the more involved and intense game plays beautifully. I think it is a glitch with the bios and the card because sometimes the warning beep will occur when it's disabled...and other times when my temps were reading 127C they didn't. So right now I have no clue ti'll tomorrow. I'll keep you guys posted on what the problem is/was.
