HELP! Is 70 oC too hot for Athlon 1.4GHZ

Using ASUS probe on my A7V266-E mobo, it informs me that my CPU runs at a temp of 58 oC when idle and gets up to 70 oC when running processor intensive games. Is this normal? Could I reduce this any?

I have a Volcano 5 HSF with system fan and exhust fan.

that's way too high IMO. Are you O/Cing? maybe you should get an intake case fan too..

is your vcore at 2v or something? :Q 58c idle seems really hot.

It does seem like a really high temp, but that could be due to an incorrectly calibrated temperature sensor. Are you having problems with lock-ups or corrupted data? If you aren't having any problems, I wouldn't worry about it.

I thought mine was too hot at 49 C (idle)/ 53 C (load). My rig is an Iwill KK266, Taisol hsf, front and rear Panaflo 80's. I did some digging and found the vcore (board was set on Auto) running at 1.84 - a little too high for my taste since I'm not ocing. So I lowered the vcore to 1.73 (in the bios it's set to 1.65 - my board seems to read high) and the temps dropped to 46/49 and I'm happy with that.

Too hot. Blow the dust out of the HS and check the heat sink compound to see if it's dried out.

Waay too hot IMO

Use some arctic silver thermal compound on it.
Try downclocking it, I did it until I got a better heatsink/fan.
Mount a nice 80 cfm fan on the heatsink.

How hot is it in your area? That REALLY matters. When it was scrorching around here, my processor (being a 1.4 GgHz T-Bird), with a SWIFTECH MCX462 Heatsink on it ran at 51 C at full load. That was completely outrageous, BUT, now that the temperature outside is ok, it runs at 40 C at full load. (mind you its still hot) In the winter time, I suspect I will be getting the temperature in the mid-30's. Also, check your system temperature, because it is a direct influence on the processor temperature.

You should know that the AMD 1.4 T-Bird is THE most heat producing processor. It has a tremendous amount of heat in it, but a very small core.

The first thing you should do is use some Arctic Silver. (make sure to download the instruction from arcticsilver.com)

I remember asus was famous for reporting temps 8-10c higher then other socket a boards, but that was back with kt133a boards....

So 70c could be more like 60c, while hot still it is within range of operation. Is it 100 percent stable even when reporting 70c??? If so you must be fine...However anything you can do to bring it down will help in the long run, both for the longevity of the chip and possibly other devices in your system...

Seems too hot if everything is working properly in a normal case and room. First off, check voltage in bios or mb to be sure its at default. Then pull the heatsink and reset with new thermal paste and ensure the fan is cleaned, working properly and the heatsink is attached normally. Adjust cables and cords in the box to ensure airflow around the cpu is unobstructed. Use canned air to blow out all the fans in the case. I usually use my shopvac on blow for this and be sure to do it outside. When you restart, go to bios and monitor temp in health to see if theres any change. Different monitoring programs will report different temps though so only compare with same program from before. That should help.

It's not the greatest HS/fan but it's rated to 1500 MHz. I have an Athlon 1300 that I o'cd to 1430 on an Abit KT7 Raid board with the volcano 5 HS/fan. Idle temp is 48C. When I drop it down to default (1300 MHz), the idle temp is 46C. It does produce more heat than other CPUs but 58/70C seems too much. I also have an Antec SX1030 case with 4 case fans for air circulation, which I am sure drops the temps a little. As others have said, reseat the HS/fan with Artic silver and check the temps again.
