help ipod in car!

My car dosen't have a tape deck, and no aux input. (99 saab 93)
and the FM transmitter sounds like crap and goes in and out. (I'm using tunecast II) Is there any other way to get the IPOD working?

I'm guessing not but I just wanted to confirm with the ATOT crew!

you can't depend on FM transmitters

It might not work well in the city, etc. something blocking signals

thats what im looking for too, but on my 99 9-5, i dont think there is any way to do this. at all.

in order to put an aftermarket unit into a Saab with SID (I or II) you must first take the car to a dealer and have them disable the headunit, then you can proceed, and 90% of the SID's functions are now gone.

I believe theres something you can connect to a stock stereo that actually gets placed behind the dash. I assume its pricey though and Im not 100% sure it will work with your car. Check www.ipodlounge.com though.

None of the aftermarket solutions are even good from what I've read. I believe clarion has the only decent setup. Pioneer and Alpine make searching cumbersome, and the Pioneer only outputs 8 characters of text onto HU.

I checked about the wires directly into head unit but its not supported for the saab. I looked at the monster icruze and couple other manufacturers.

monster's one, whatever it's called is great. If you get it from radioshack, it's $10 more than the one from best buy, but you get to individually select your stations instead of the 8 presets it already has. OK, you'll probably get a clear signal on one of those 8 channels, but who knows, maybe you're in an area with lots of pirate radio.

I've had great experience with the monster charger/fm tuner. You can probably pick it up from radio shack or best buy and give it a whirl.

Got an actual pic of the dash of this thing? I'm 99.999% certain I could come up with a way to make this happen without disabling anything 😛

Okay. I just looked up some pictures. The SID unit is apparently seperate from the head unit. This is good. Take the heat unit, cut the speakers and antenna off it's wiring harnass, and stuff it back in the dash somewhere (or extend the wires and put it somewhere else). Connect the antenna and speakers to the aftermarket head unit with an aux input, and tap it into the appropriate power circuits. Bam, you now have two HUs. One that works, and one that's shoved in a corner somewhere so your SID still works. This may also work for VW's captain-insano system, but you never can be sure with the way VW engineers things.

nah i think my saab has some crap in its windshield, I get crappy reception. On the other hand my old corolla worked great with a FM transmitter.

there's a reason why the monster transmitter costs twice that of your tunecast II. I've used the itrip, and the tunecast, and I agree they both suck. You might be right that there's some shielding around the car and the antenna is a shielded wire so that the radio waves can't get from inside your car to your antenna to your head unit, but if buying a higher power FM transmitter is your only shot at improving the audio, i'd giv it a shot.
