Help! Internet & Cell phone Access in Germany

1. I Live in the US. I have a laptop and a cell phone. I usually dial in to Earthlink when on the road for internet access. I assume Germany will have high speed connections and I can just plug in, but what happens if they don't. What happens if I need to dialup?

2. What network is Germany on for cell phones? Do I need a phone with a GSM card like you do in Europe? Are there any companies that rent them?

Eh...unless you're there on business with a company that will pay your phone bill, just use one of their many 24-7 Internet cafes...and absorb some culture in the process!

(Also, many upscale hotels do have at least lobby internet access, but don't bet on high-speed in your room.)

Germany as well as Europe uses GSM. My T-Mobile account worked perfect there.

Also, if my memory serves me correctly, the Germans use totally different phone jacks, so I don't think it would be possible to run a line from an internal modem in your laptop to the wall. If, say you are like me, and are bringing your Sony Ericsson (T-Mobile) T610 phone, you could simply dial 001-XXX-YYY-ZZZZ and log in, but I would imagine the speed would be lower than normal and the cost would be QUITE high ($0.99/minute). If you are traveling on business, by all means expense that, but otherwise, I wouldn't.

Check out this page and find out if you will be in any of those cities. If so, that's a good Internet cafe business.
