I bought my copy of Windows XP RC2 and want to install it on a brand new system with a new HD. The HD has not been fdisked or formatted yet. How do I get XP loaded onto this HD - new system?

Go into BIOS and set CDROM as 3rd boot device (assuming 1st is floppy, 2nd is hard drive). Put the XP CD in your CDROM then reboot and go from there.

I tried that and it will not boot from the cd-rom. I get message "BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER".

My system is:
av7133
amd 1.2 266
512 ram
asus s500 50x cdrom
...

hd is on ide1 - master
cdrom is on ide2 - master

A friend made the XP RC2 cd for me so I would not have to download it and burn it myself.
What files should I see on the cd at the root level, i have/see:
autorun.inf
readme.htm
setup.exe
win51.rc2
win51ip.rc2

Hmmmm......did your friend burn your copy direct from the ISO image, or did he just burn the files/folders to a CD? If he did the latter, he may not have burned it as a bootable CD.

I tried that. I ran the setup.exe and it told me that this program cannot be run from DOS.

No No not setup.exe

Use Dos boot disk

switch to cdrom

cd to I386

run winnt.exe
