Help installing windows XP on SATA drive

I purchased all new parts from newegg. Here are my components:

AMD Sempron 2500+
Gigabyte 7VT600-RZC
Kingston PC3200 512MB DDR
WD 80GB SATA

When I boot the system using the Windows XP CD, it asks me if I want to install a 3rd party SCSI driver press F6 so I do that. It asks me to enter a floppy disk which has my SATA driver so I have done that. On the list of drivers I pick VIA KT600 SATA Host/Controller because I am installing only 1 drive, so no RAID is needed.

Everything goes fine, it loads the drivers and then it gets to the part where it says "Setup is starting Windows" It loads for a few seconds and then the computer shuts down and I get beeps from the system speaker. The beeps are a high pitched and low pitched beeps alternating for about 1/2 a second each.

I tried updating the BIOS because a newer version of the BIOS adds support for Semprons but no results.

Any help would be awesome, thanks in advance.

Is this a new system? If so, did you properly apply thermal interface between heatsink and processor? Sounds like it may be an overheating problem.

Every thing is brand new. I have a retail Sempron processor so I applied the heatsink directly to the processor with the given paste on the heatsink. Its not overheating because it shuts down in the same spot every time, and the has only been running for a few minutes each time.

My guess is it would be something wrong with accessing the hard drive, seeing as how, every time it tries to enter windows, right after it has loaded temporary windows files onto the drive, is when it crashes. But I have no idea how to solve the problem.

I'm not familiar with Gigabyte boards, but have you checked the settings in the BIOS to make sure they are properly set for SATA. Some MB's are very difficult with SATA. An Abit board I have has all kinds of settings to get SATA up, while my Asus board worked right out of the box.

have you tried installing the windows w/o installing the raid drivers? I have a DFI board and as long as windows sees the drive, you don't need to install drivers. Unless it's raid which you said you didn't have.

Also, in the bios there ae ways to turn off sata connectors. check and make sure the one your using is turned on.

There is a setting in Bios which says SATA Mode and you can chose either RAID or IDE. The instructions that came with the mobo say to put it to IDE if you have only 1 drive and are not setting up a RAID array, which I have done.

I tried installing windows w/out the F6 and it did the same thing... =

any other ideas other than, maybe the sata drive is defective?

okay I'm a noob, and installed the processor heatsink backwards and the heatsink was actually touching the processor core. *bangs head against wall*

reversed it and everything is working fine 😀 thanks for your help
