Help installing Windows on SCSI HD

I have a 20gig IDE hard drive that I'm using at the moment as my main HD. I just purchased a 9gig SCSI HD to use as my main HD.

During boot-up, I go into the BIOS, low-level format the HD, disable my IDE bus, and change the boot-sequence to start with SCSI.

I put in a Windows 98SE CD and it formats the HD to FAT32, and when it copies the files necessary for Windows installation, it freezes. I don't know what's wrong or how to correct it.

I only have a Windows 2000 Upgrade CD, so I plan on installing Windows 98SE and then installing Windows 2000 on it. I'm running Windows 2000 on my 20 gig at the moment.

I can format the SCSI hard drive and access it from the 20 gig, but I can't boot from the 9 gig.

well first off install with the Win 2000 upgrade disk all you need to do is insert the 98 Disk when it tells you so it can verify that you have a lower windows OS. when installing Win2K place the CD in the drive and boot off the CD. when the screen goes blue press F6 and keep pressing it becase it will tell you to press it but it doesnt stay up that long and it is easy to miss. F6 will let you install the SCSI drivers that Windows needs so that you can use the SCSI drive. its a simmilar process for a RAID card.
Also if you are using Win2K format with NTFS its better than FAT32.

I don't think it matters if I install the SCSI drivers or not. They both come up with the same result: a corrupted NTOSKRNL.exe file.

this is really starting to piss me off.. I copied the file from my 20 gig HD to the 9 gig HD and it is still corrupted.. I tried repairing it and reformatting/reinstalling it, but it still comes up wih a corrupt file.

You might recheck the termination settings of the drive. I have my best luck using active terminators on the end of the cable, and disabling all of the drives settings related to termination.

I just bought an automatic terminator for the drive... it's supposd to terminate U2W, U160, and LVD drives just fine. My drive is an LVD drive, and I'm sure the cable is fine

I think it might be just some messed up setting in the boot file. Perhaps Hard Disk or Partition number?

I'm at my wits end on this. I've tried installing and reinstalling windows so many times now.

does the terminator have to be at the END of the cable? I put it on the slot right after the drive (it's the only drive in the U2W chain).

oh well.. I just low-level formatted the HD again. I'm going to go into windows with my 20 gig and format it with NTFS... again...

If you didn't have any termination until now, that would be the prime suspect in my mind. See if it behaves now 🙂

(and yes, the terminator should be at the end, with the drive on the next plug)

well, I got the terminator at the beginning of the day.. that's when I started trying to install all this stuff and getting all of these problems

but I'll move the SCSI stuff at the end of the chain and see what happens
