Help installing ROM on Motorola Droid

I was running SS and wanted to try out UD8, so I booted into recovery mode and wiped the system & cache partitions. I downloaded UD8 directly from the authors site and unzipped it into my /nandroid directory so it looks like this now /nandroid/UD8/ with all the UD8 & folders under neath it. In recovery mode I went to backup/restore, advanced backup and chose UD8 and hit restore. I got an ERROE: Nandroid exited with status 25, Google is saying this is because files are missing or it's under too many folders. I checked and it's /nandroid/UD8, so I unzipped it again to make sure all the files were infact there, same thing when I tried to install it again. I haven't switched between roms yet so I'm not sure if I'm missing a step here. I know when I ran SS I never had any issues (I could see any ways)

anyone want to help an Android n00b here?

UD8 = Ultimate Droid 8? Isn't that extremely old?

Seems like you're going about this the hard way, Ultimate Droid is available from ROM Manager and downloadable OTA/WiFi. Most builds are very easily applied through ROM Manager regardless, flash Clockwork Recovery and you're pretty much good to go.

Thanks for the heads up about rom manager, sorry I wasn't paying attention it's UD Froyo eXtreme 8.0 which just came out a week or 2 ago, that's directly from their web site. This one apparently isn't on Rom Manager, I will continue to mess with it and figure something out.


*EDIT* I can't get into recovery mode with clockwork installed, when I boot I get the moto logo and after a few minutes it goes black, restarts and loads normally. I can only get it to boot to recovery in the flash recovery mode. ARGH

while in ROM mananger, reflash clockwork. Should be the top option IIRC.

Any ways, Rom Manager only has a beta version of the latest UD, and the one I downloaded keeps giving me the 25 error no matter what I do. 6 straight hours and I've made no progress here, so I'm giving up. Its possible Blackdroid built his install package for SPRecovery only. Most zips, you don't unzip at all, you just copy to the SD card and select 'Install ROM from ZIP' either from Recovery or from within ROM Manager.

Last I heard, Blackdroid basically copied the Cyanogenmod source, skinned it black and called it his own. He took a lot of flak from cyanogen, koush, and other cm devs for taking credit for their work. I believe he also claimed credit for native features of Android, written by Google.

Odd you mention that I just watched a Youtube video where a guy was saying there's beef between the UD guy and the CM team. I got it working by renaming it update.zip and putting it in the root. If CM is basically the same thing but not all black & red I might have to try it out. I'm not a huge fan of red and welp, this rom has red all over. 1st boot with it, man it looks worlds nicer than Simply Stunning. I'll run it a few days and switch over to CM and see which I like better.

Odd you mention that I just watched a Youtube video where a guy was saying there's beef between the UD guy and the CM team. I got it working by renaming it update.zip and putting it in the root. If CM is basically the same thing but not all black & red I might have to try it out. I'm not a huge fan of red and welp, this rom has red all over. 1st boot with it, man it looks worlds nicer than Simply Stunning. I'll run it a few days and switch over to CM and see which I like better.

My bad, I should have remembered this little tidbit. SPRecovery usually wants the file named update.zip. Its been so long since I've had to do things the painful way, ROM Manager has stupefied me.

There was a lot of drama between Blackdroid and the CM devs over it. I know BD made some tweaks to his UD builds that weren't in CM, but the bulk about it was just a black/red CM. With BD taking credit for various features developed by the CM team.

Cyanogenmod aims to be a more 'vanilla' Android experience. Simply Stunning seems to be more power user oriented, for those who like tons of options and scripts available to them. Personally, I like Sapphire and Cyanogen. Their both solid builds.

You don't need to create a directory. Take the UD8 zip file, drop it on the root of your sdcard, open up the Rom Manager app, and click on "Install ROM from SDcard". Browse to the zip file, open it, and let Rom Manager do its' thing.

That being said, I would just use CM6. It's going to be more stable and have more support than UD8. Plus, you won't be supporting an a-hole. There a ton of great themes that you can skin right over top of CM6, probably some that look really close to UD8.

Another nice ROM to try that is based off of Cyanogen is Shadow ROM. I flashed it last night, and it's very nice. The devs of it are really responsive on droid forums.

It was really interesting at Droidforums.net when all that stuff was happening. I didn't care too much, but I did stop using UD after all that. Everyone else seems to credit the appropriate party.

I'm eagerly awaiting a new Bugless Beast release.

It seems like, at this point, there's not much to differentiate the ROMs.

One cool feature I liked on Steam ROM was the chat room app (chatbox?) for tech support and the like. Kind of cool to just fire it up to ask or answer questions, or talk about OT stuff on occasion.

I'm liking liquid froyo so far, but the latest SS seemed to be the quickest and smoothest ROM I've used. Subjective I suppose.
