Help installing nic

I was trying to help a friend over the phone install a belkin 10/100 nic in his HP (I think it's an AMD 350) running Win98. For some reason Win98 would not recognize it. His wife does taxes for people on the computer and she doesn't back up , so I don't want to screw around too much. For some reason it wouldn't recognize the nic. We spent about 3 hours on the phone today (he lives about 1.5 hours from me so it's too far to drive). We forced windows to install the drivers using the add new hardware wizard, but it still wouldn't show up under device manager. I also tried disabling the serial port in the bios to free up resources. I'm out of ideas, other than a bad nic. Does anyone have any ideas?

TIA

Yep, I forgot to mention that. He had three slots open and we tried all of them. I'll have to see if I can get a list of irqs. What's the easiest way to do that with win98. I forgot.

Thanks

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information.

Then go on the left to Hardware Resources then IRQs.
