I have a Gateway 300 that came with a 6.4 gig hd. Last year I bought a Maxtor 20 gig. The 20 is my primary, 6.4 slave. I also have a DVD and CDRW on the other port. I just bought a Western Digital 30 gig. I plan on removing my 6.4 gig and using the WD as the slave to the Maxtor. When I first tried to install the Maxtor (last year) I installed it before using the boot disk that it came with. After 2 weeks of troubleshooting I finally got it to work. The WD says to install and then use the disk (opposite of the Maxtor). I'm afraid if I do this, it will screw up my Maxtor. Has anyone done this before and can anyone offer advice?

I won't screw up your Maxtor... if you want it as the slave on the same cable set that up or set it as Cable Select and manually set it in the BIOS, then just use a 98 boot disk to fdisk the WD drive and format it at the dos promopt. Then you're all set.

Enjoy!

I believe some systems require that you make the larger drive in a two drive system the master and the smaller the slave, don't know about your system though.
