Currently I have a rig with two 80gb HDs on the first IDE channel and a DVD drive as the master on the second IDE cable. I bought a new 160gb hd and attempted to install it as the slave drive on the 2nd IDE channel, but I could not get the system to recognize that it was there (in the BIOS or in XP).

I tried every combination of jumper settings between the DVD drive and new HD on the 2nd IDE cable and none would allow them both to work. The DVD drive as the master alone works fine and the new HD as the master alone works also, but I cannot make both drives show up at the same time. I tried using the new IDE cable that came with my HD, instead of the old one already in my system, and I know that both power connectors I'm using for the DVD and HD are working.

Both channels on the 2nd IDE cable are enabled in the BIOS and in XP. I also know that the HD works because it shows if it's the primary on the 2nd cable, and eventually I took out one of the 80gb drives on the 1st IDE cable and put the 160gb on there.

Is there something stupid that I'm forgetting to do, or is there some reason why this simply won't work at all?

You seem to have tried everything possible - check the BIOS one more time to make sure the Secondary Slave is set to auto. You could try using the CS jumper for the DVD drive.

If nothing works, you may have a faulty Secondary IDE channel on that mobo.

if the windows xp could not recongize 3rd hd is because you have not format it yet...after format, it will recongize 3rd hd...Use program that comes with hd will take care of the problem.

It needs to be recognized by the BIOS first before XP will be able to see it. Once it's there, the Disk Manager in XP will be able to see any unformatted/unpartitioned drives in the system.

I downloaded and installed updated drivers for the mobo and flashed the BIOS last night so we'll see if that makes any difference.

I could be wrong because I installed 3rd hd without open BIOS because it already recongized and Windows 2000 did not find new hd until disk manager took care of it.
