I installed windows media player 7 yesterday and now it has really messed up my computer. I could only start it in safe mode after that. I was able to start up normally after doing a scanreg/restore and restoring the previous registry but whenever I restart windows 98SE I run into the same problem and can only boot to safe mode unless I do a registry restore.
I think it's a direct x problem even though I have 3D graphics. I ran dxdiag and the directdraw and direct 3D tests passed ok. Under input in dxdiag it says problems were found in the system registry (something with the registry key msjstick.drv it says, which I assume is a driver for a joystick?) and it said I should reinstall DirectX. Under DirectX drivers it also says that 2 of the drivers are uncertified by Microsoft, whatever that means lol!
This is frustrating! I un-installed WMP7 using add/remove programs and a couple of other programs that were installed with it but it hasn't fixed the problem. I'm not even sure how I can un-install DirectX7 so that it could be re-installed. I wish I'd never tried to install WMP7 ugh! Does anyone know what I could do to get my system back the way it was before? It's a couple yrs old and a Compaq AMD K6 3D processor MMX 3DNow, 483mhz and running with 256 MB Ram with Win98SE installed.
