Hi, I have just upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP (format and fresh install) and now my modem will not connect to the internet.

It dials the number, then gets stuck on a constant beep every second or so and does nothing else. That is the strange thing, if it didnt dial at all then I would imagine it would be a compatability issue, and if it connected but didnt let me log on the it would probably be dialup/isp settings but this really makes no sense; especially as it worked in Win2k which is pretty similar.

The modem is a generic 56k pci which comes up as Astech MDP 3858-E in device manager and I have tried what seem to be the latest drivers (obtained from driverguide.com)

Please please help me, I am so confused!

Yes I have; still no luck.

I think those tones are endless 'handshake' tones which means a problem with v.90 compatibility or something.

Do you think it is possible to upgrade the firmware on this piece of junk?

Anyone else ever had this problem?

it's a long shot, but you said it was working in Win2k?

Have you tried forcing to install the win2k driver?
