Help! install Windows XP on PowerEdge SC430 server

My company just bought 3 Dell PowerEdge SC430 servers. These are designed to take Redhat Enterprise or Windows Server but I'd like to install Windows XP Pro on them.

When setup starts up, it loads files from the CD, with messages like "Loading (NTFS File System)..." on the status bar. After it loads all the files the system crashes with a STOP error 0x7E pci.sys and never even makes it to the "Welcome to Windows XP Setup" screen.

Does this mean it's not possible to install Windows XP on a Dell server machine? I called Dell tech support but they basically said they didn't know. (The guy I talked to said he's never heard of the error before...go figure it's dell).

I tried this on all 3 servers with the same result, with 2 different Windows XP CDs!!!

I have run XP on four different Dell boxes, and it loaded fine, two are PowerEdge 850, and I forget the other one, about two years old. I used a OEM Dell disk, perhaps that is why it worked for me?

I know there was this issue in XP sp1 and earlier. Are your XP cds sp2?

And why don't you want a server os? (the three we have running XP were because we pretty much needed a XP pro box running some legacy apps that wouldn't run in a 2003 environment, and just needed them to fit in a rack)

Dell doesn't support running Windows XP on the SC430 server line so it's not surprising that they "didn't know why your discs won't install."

Anyway, you need an XP cd with SP2 slipstreamed and it'll install fine. Google is your friend.

Didn't you get a Server Assistant CD? Does it have an install option for XP? I can't remember if Server Assistant 4.5 does or not.

I've put XP Professional on a couple of SC420s. The last one was a $220 special for my mother. I don't own any SC430s, but I imagine they are pretty similar except for the 430's ability to handle dual-core processors.

I wrote a note for the SC420 FAQ n the Poweredge forums on how I installed XP on the SC420. It can be done without a floppy drive as long as you don't want to use the built-in RAID function. If you want RAID, you'll either need a floppy drive or you'll need a slipstreamed XP Install CD with the Dell SATA RAID drivers onboard.
