General Questions
1) What is your budget?
I don’t really have a budget, this is mainly for school and I want to get something that will offer me the longevity I need to get through grad school, call it another 3 years, with something that doesn’t suck.

2) What size notebook would you prefer?
13”-15”

3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
USA

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
I own an I pad II, they are great, not adverse to Apple other than the learning curve associated with going from PC to Apple OS

5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
Sure thing

6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
School work, papers, projects [think minimal graphics] music and surfing the internet

7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Yes, this thing will leave the house everyday and be used both outside of the home and inside.

8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
Nope, have a desktop PC for that

9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
Need is a relative term since I don’t foresee not having the ability to plug it in

13) Do you want a Glossy/reflective screen or a Matte/non-glossy screen?
Either or, not picky

14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Not very

15) When are you buying this laptop?
January

16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
2-3 years

Notebook Components:
17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?
Absolutely has to have a SSD drive.

18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
Nope

I am currently looking at the Asus Zenbook and the Macbook air, both in 13 inch, with my biggest requirement being the footprint of the machine, IE weight and space in my bookbag, and build quality and longevity. I NEED this too last at least 2-3 years, which for what I need it for seems viable. My biggest drawback to the apple is the lack of accident/replacement warranty available unless I purchase it through eBay etc, and receive a square trade warranty. The warranty is especially important because of my clumsy progeny and the total time this laptop will be spending in transit.
Thanks for looking guys, any help or nods in the right direction would be appreciated!

If you want to run Windows, forget the Mac. The Asus looks like the better bet in that circumstances.

Agreed; The Asus is a Win7 Machine (granted, one could argue that you can dual-boot Win7 w/ the Mac - but there's another $100 + labor) with a higher-resolution screen. If it's for just general use I'd even go so far as to recommend any laptop made within the last 2~3 years.

If, for a moment, I may make a tangent-suggestion outside of what you're looking at, I'd suggest the Thinkpad X220 - first it's a Thinkpad so the build quality/durability concern you have is covered; second it has an option for an IPS display which means taht the display itself is higher-quality - admittedly it is a 13x7 resolution but at this size (12.5") a higher pixel density may make objects hard to see on screen; third, yes, it does not have an SSD but you can swap one if you were so inclined; and fourth, while it is thicker than the laptops you've mentioned it has been out for a while so you might be able to find one for a lower price.
