Help in speeding up system

Hi all,

I bought a P4 2.4 533 chip and a p4s8x motherboard combo from this site. The seller said the chip ran hot. I have since built a system with it. Chip isnt running very hot (43 at idle 56 at load) with a Zalman 7000 and some good artic silver 5. BUT!!! The system is running very slowly. Benchmarked the ati 9600 se with 3d mark and was off the charts low. Seems that performance is equal to my 1.3 athlon.

It is running VERY stable. Passed 12 hours of prime 95.

It seems multipler is locked at 24 so I have it at 24 x 100.

Running 2 x 256 sticks of corsair xms 3000. Timings in bios read 2-3-3-6 Have them running at 166.

I have video set at 128 mg.

agp at 8x

Is there something I am missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Leigh

If your CPU is a 533mhz FSB chip your CPU fsb should be 133mhz, that may be the reason why it seems like it is running slow. Also, do you play any games? If so, which ones because it may just be your video card. The 9600se isn't exactly the greatest card for the newer 3D games, but if you are running some older 3D or non 3D games you shouldn't have any problems with it.

Your chips' multiplier should be 18, not 24. If you're running at 100MHz FSB, then you're only running your chip at 1.8GHz.

nah, simple maths - 100x24 = 2400 😛

But, this will give him lower memory bandwidth, add to that these chips can do 3ghz+, id say bump the fsb to 133 for a start anyway, 24x133 = no calculator, but whatever....

Azzy, he said his chip is the 533MHz FSB version and that the multiplier was locked. It HAS to be an 18 multiplier if it's a 2.4GHz 533MHz FSB chip.

It seems my mutiplier is locked at 24. Bios says something about setting motherboard to jumper free in order to be able to change the 1st 4 actions in the bios. 1. cpu speed 2. multiplier 3. fsb 4. ram speed.

I can change 1. 3. and 4. But it wot let me change 2.

I have no idea how to set motherboard to jumper free.

UGH

that motherboard is probably designed for 400fsb then. Id just try and overclock it as much as i can tbh.

Leigh,

Does your BIOS actually say you're multiplier is 24? If so then you got a 400MHz FSB chip and not the 533MHz version.

YES!!!

It just lists 24 as the multiplier even if I do everything manually. That make sense!!!! Maybe chip is only 400. HMMM.

I am such an idiot.

What OS are you running? If you're running windows XP you can right click on "my computer" and select properties and it will tell you what speed your CPU is currently running at. Might help some.

It is running at 2.4 according to windows and sandra and everything else I have tested and benched on it.

Oh. XP Pro

alright then my bet is you got a 400MHz FSB version...which COULD be lucky in your case. Depending on how good you think your cooling is, try stepping up the FSB to 133MHz, you should get almost 3.2GHz out of your chip.

right now all indications are pointing to your initial statement that the chip is 2.4GHz with a 24 multiplier, just that it's the 400MHz version.

The 400mhz version is significantly slower than the 533mhz version. Make sure that you purchased the 533mhz version and that your motherboard supports the 533mhz fsb. Then make sure that your motherboard is not jumpered to the 100mhz fsb and verify whether your motherboard is detecting a multiplier of 24 or 18. It should be 18x133 if it's the 533mhz cpu, but if it is 24x100 you have the 400mhz cpu. If you were sent the wrong item, contact the store you purchased it from and let them know what happened.

just raised fsb to 110 to start. raised speed of ram to 366. Temps stayed the same.

Running both 3d mark 2003 and 2001

2001 was 4800
2003 was 1650

Ran both again after upping fsb and ram.

Scores about the same.

Not really concerned about how well the card is running (Can always change that). More concerned about getting system somewhat optimized. These scores were the lowest for any system with a 9600 card in the world!!!!

I WIN!!! something at least.
