Help in locating PS thread (Fortron I thought but I guess not)

So I'm looking for a new PS and I haven't posted - just reading up and leeching off everyone else's threads 😀..........

In one of these 23,345 power supply threads, I remeber checking out the PS of which there was some discussion. But now I've checked out so many threads and power supplies at Newegg, I can't even remember which one it was 😱.

A thread about 2 weeks ago started w/ someone linking a PS and asking about it. And here are some of the basic spec's I recall. It was black, modular, 480 Watt (I think), and had this "cute" little front panel fan control that you can stick in a large drive bay. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I thought it was Fortron or Thermaltake incidentally, but I can't seem to find it under searching PS, power supplies or Fortron......

Hey, thanks for looking. That's not it. It was SLI/PCI E ready, but it is also under $ 100. It's around $ 70 IIRC..... And it was a link to Newegg for sure......Anyone else?

You know what's funny, is that PS basically fits the criteria to a tee of what I described. It's just not the one I'm talking about. 😉

Thanks, still not it though. It's got a front panel fan controller (totally unecessary but an added bonus, nonetheless 🙂) In fact, I think that is what should make this stand out. How many PS's come with the panel that fit all the other criteria? Maybe I'm throwing everyone off because I remember it being a solid name PSU, ie Fortron FSP... but maybe that's not it.

Edit: Maybe it's not Fortron because now I am reading that FSP doesn't make modular yet. Maybe it was just nicely sleeved? 😛

On a side note, this is one of the funniest things I've read all day - about a guy stating why he doesn't trust modular technology yet:

The modular PSU may be made in a factory and tested but who do you think is throwing all the sleeved cabeling together? Probably 12 year old Chinese girls working at a fevered pace
for < $1 a day. Do I want to trust my expensive hardware to poor connection? NO!

Well, good PSU:

FSP, Seasonic, OCZ, PC Power and Cooling (<-right?), and Antech? (again not sure).

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head right now...don't know what else to say except check Toms Hardwares PSU Stress test, I'll get a link for that.

EDIT: Here we go, Couldn't find a dam thing on that site since they changed everything. Well if your looking for a PSU it'll be in there.

Thanks for the link. That has a nice table for anyone buying a PS right now. I went through most of those - at least the good ones and I don't see it there. Maybe this tells me something - the one I am looking for is not among the latest and greatest PSU's 🙂. I do recall it having alot of good reviews though. Hmmm. One last bump.

Enermax Liberty are the only from-the-factory-modular PSUs I'd trust.

Do you need the PSUs for bells and whistles? Or do you need it to quietly and efficiently provide all the power your computer needs?

CoolerMaster (Real Power) has one with a front panel power meter and Sunbeamtech has a modular PSU with a fan controller that fits a floppy bay. Google is your friend... Could easily be found using same.

. The better PSU companies don't mess with gewgaws and gimcracks lile modular and fan controllers. The Sunbeam doesn't sound like a very reliable PSU from what I've seen.

That's not it either. So the simple google search that you did has not found it. Neither did it for me 😉. The add-on panel is black FWIW. And also FWIW, I never said I like it because it had this or that. I'm using that as an example for it to stand out. As I imagine not even 10% of PS's come with "gewgaws." If I said it was a black 480 Watt PSU I was looking for, you wouldn't be able to find it, now would you? Thanks anyway, it's not important enough for anymore of my time. I'm going with a 400 - 500 Watt Fortron I think.

Well if we couldn't fine what you wanted, we certainly listed every good PSU that there is in the world. Just pick one of those and you'll be fine. I got a Seasonic S12 and I love it. The cables arn't sleeved, but theres nothing a good zip tie and tape wont do.

The sunbeam comes in both black and silver and in two different wattage ratings - I don't know what the lower wattage ones put out. And there's a discontinued TT model that came with a lot of junk.

I had given up and of course because I did, I found it. Realized I hadn't checked every Sunbeam PSU at Newegg. Thanks for the lead. It's this one Here. So this is junk? I recall it having alot of variables which was good - Alot of wattage, Modular/Sleeved, SLI ready, PCI-E, 4 Sata.......and the fancy schmancy front panel 😉. But between this and the Forton -it's FSP all the way then?

It would be interesting to find out who actually makes the Sunbeam - I can't make out the file no. under the RU/UL symbol so I can't look it up. And the combined power ratings show that those individual +12 rail specs are some marketer's fantasy. I'd much rather have an FSP550-60PLG or FSP550PLG-SLI at about $85. per Froogle. You get real value for your money there.
. Save money and drop back a bracket. Almost no one really needs more than a quality 350W PSU with the power apportioned among the rails properly for the target systen - yes, even for high end systems. So look in the 400-450W bracket. Look at the Zippy HG2 series, some of the new Fortron/Sparkle models, etc.

PS - Newegg rarely has the best bottom-line price on PSUs. .bh.
