I cant get through that mission.. do I follow the guy at the appartments? I go up on the roof and that guys trys to shoot me and runs and then I cant find it.
help in gta vice city cant get past "the chase"

Run after him, I think you run north over the rooftops. You have to jump once (it's not a bad jump I believe, and its from a higher rooftop to a lower one, so its fairly easy) and another time there's a plank you can walk SLOWLY (so you don't fall) across. He'll shoot at you but really never come close to hitting you.
He'll then jump down into a waiting BF Injection (dune buggy) and either he or the driver will shoot at you as you chase them. You don't have much of an option for a vehicle, the Faggio is right there, but I skipped it and opted to jack a passing BF Injection of my own. They'll almost certainly shoot your tires out, and I lost one car to them before they got to prawn island.
The next mission is FUN

. It involves the m60, thats all I'm gonna say while we're on the subject of Vice City anybody been able to pass "The Driver" mission yet form the Malibu Club. I've been stuck on that mission for the past 4 days, as well as the first mission for the Marina. I hate those checkpoint missions.
just use the sniper rifle on all of them. just make sure that you are far enough that they dont see you. the billboard guy is the easiest, and the ones after that, you can just shoot them while they are in their parked cars. if you get too close to them, then they start running away. sniper rifle is your best friend.
drive a car in front of the caravan... it'll stop, then grab another car and run some army guys down, kill as many as possible and the run for the tank.
You have a slower accelerating car, but it does have a higher top end speed.
You have to run behind Hilary until you can build up speed. Often times, you can get next to him when there's a car in the right lane. He'll hit it and you'll get an advantage.
Once you get out in front, just drive safely. This one took me a while to beat.
I had no trouble with that mission, actually. I think I got REALLY lucky. I jacked an Infernus, stopped infront of the tank, got out, pulled out the driver and drove off. I was actually on starfish island because in the chaos I didn't check my radar and was going the wrong way
. Using the turrent boost trick, I ended up at the garage with time to spare. The following are answered in no specific order: (spoilers ahoy)
In the roof-chase mission, you see the guy and he runs; you go up the stairs right there on your left, chase him and *make sure* you don't fall down between buildings by walking across planks. After that it was comparatively easy for me; just tail him.
On the european gang members mission, I cheated after failing a couple times doing it the old fashioned way; i did it with the sea sparrow at the vercetti mansion that you get upon getting seventy packages. It's featuring a nice little gatling gun when you press r1; practice up and those guys are goners with it. If you don't have a chopper with guns or a rocket launcher stuff becomes much, much more difficult; don't worry you can skip it 'til you're well on your way.
Also a note on the tank mission: if you take the tank to your hideout in downtown with a garage and a chopper (name escapes me), you can hold it for your own personal uses, which are many.

i've had this game since the day it was released and just got past the chase,...i spend way too much time looking for stuff or screwing around
The thing is, you can do the game in basically any order. I just beat the chase but it was one of the first few missions for me. It just matters who you go to first. I love this game its so much better than GTA3, the bikes, the side missions (flying the remote planes is so cool), the 80s theme, they got themselves a winner

The thing with the chase mission is that you don't have to stop the guy. You just gotta be able to follow him to see where he runs to. Remember you can always jack a durable vehicle before going to the apartments and strategically place it exactly where he will jump off the roof. That way you can quickly get into that vehicle instead of the faggio or jacking another car, which might or might not be there.
As for the tank mission, I used a sniper rifle and did a headshot on the drive at the top. That created enough chaos for the driver below to step out and for me to run up and get in
BTW, does anyone know if there's a map online that pinpoints where everything is? I jacked a firetruck parked behind some gates once but I can't seem to find it anymore. And when can I start buying buildings? I just finished the missions w/ the ju ju lady.

There's another firetruck near the VCPD building in Downtown. Get arrested there, and hang a right where it starts you off after being busted. Its down the street a bit on the left.
You can start buying properties after "Shakedown" where you go to the mall and have 5 minutes to break the windows. Finish all of Diaz's missions, then it's Death Row, Rub Out, and Shakedown. After Shakedown, it tells you that you can now buy property at "certain areas of the map" but all of the places I checked you could buy right after Shakedown.
When you buy properties, you get a cash pickup outside that property after you complete missions for that property. A good first business is the strip club, its only mission is easy. Spend $600 on the stripper in the VIP room in the back. It takes a while though, so I just started it up and watched something else for a while
