I/we have 2 test drive cards from Ford (via HD) that total $150.

Am planning on building a system that will have a AMD 1600 or 1700 CPU (seems best bang for the buck - no OC being done)

I can get a MB/CPU/Fan combo for $94+ on pricewatch.

NewEgg has refurbs on MB that can save $20+.

Should I grab a NewEgg refurb or get a combo?

Memory I can get via HD with no problem.

Case, drives and other items already exist in my misc bin.

If you aren't OCing... I would get a K7S5A from newegg. That thing is solid as a rock and you can pick one up for ~35 bucks. It takes both DDR and SDRAM... not at the same time of course :)

NewEgg shows as $56 - was your price just a off the wall estimate?

That price was from a HD newegg refurb not to long ago. Newegg refurbs are a bit hit or miss... but if its DOA.. they swap it out no problem. I've never had a problem with them, but I've heard others that have.

If you're interested, I have the following:

- Shuttle AK31a (rev. 3.1) motherboard. Very, very stable, but supports up to XP2100 CPUs. Original box is not present.
- 2 IDE cables, 1 floppy cable.
- Add-on card with 2 additional USB ports
- AMD Athlon XP 1500+ retail-boxed CPU (heatsink, fan, sticker) - I still have the box and the heatsink/fan was never used. 2 years remains on the warranty.
- Volcano cooling fan/heatsink - this is the one I've been using.

Price: $100.00 + shipping. ;)

PM me if you are interested.
