help in changing ide from ata66 to ata33 controller

I have had nothing but trouble with the Abit BE6-2 rev 1 motherboard running an IBM DTLA 30 gig harddrive on the ata 66 Highpoint controller.

So...I want to switch the harddrive from the 66 highpoint controller to the regular ata33 controller and I need to know if I can just switch it over or do I need to format or reset cmos or..well you get the idea.

What are the steps ..if any..to take the drive from one ide controller to another?

Firstly what troubles are you having using the Highpoint controller ?

As far as changing it, you have four ide connectors, two that use the highpoint and two that are standard.
Using a standard IDE cable connect your drive to IDE 1, on your board it should be the one directly behind the Floppy Disk connector.
In your bios if your your boot sequence is set to boot from the ATA drives only then you need to change it to boot from IDE, and check that your drive detection is set to auto, or set it up using user define.
Off the top of my head I think that's all you need to do.
hmmm I can't remember if the boot sequence on that board used Future ATA and/or SCSI to boot to the drives using the Highpoint controller, but either way change it to IDE.

I cannot say with exact certainty that the highpoint controller is the cause of my trouble but I have been on the Abit newsgroups enough to suspect that my trouble could be there.

I am using quake 3 1.17 to test stability on the internet ( my main reason for having a faster than average computer). When on the internet or even under heavy loads while using the system in non-related off internet but media intensive applications (with lots of sound) my system locks.

I can even get lockups at the boot up when my sound card loads but that is sporadic.

Without the soundcard on the mainboard (I simply pull the card off the board without dropping drivers or uninstalling) everything works fine.

I have no conflicts or ircs, I am using latest drivers for soundcard, motherboard, video, etc...

So...based on the issues related on the newsgroups with the highpoint controller and the IBM drives I am going to try taking the harddrive off the highpoint and put it on the normal ide controllers and see if that helps.

It had been suggested to me to leave the drive attached to the highpoint controller but use a 40 pin connector to limit burst rates and then I might gain stability but, in my opinion, if I were going to do that I might as well use the normal ide controller and free up an irc I am going to need anyway with my coming cable connection.

The BE6-2 seems to be a neat board becasue of the extreme flexibility but the highpoint move seems to be a real disaster from what I have read to date. I should have stayed with Aopen for a BX board. grrrr..

Any other ideas are appreciated.
