help??? i'm wondering what to upgrade

I own an Athlon 500, TNT2, Vibra 128, 128 (100mhz) ram.

I would like to upgrade the processor. However, I own one of the original Athlons and it has a MSI 6167 (slot A) motherboard.

I live in Australia and prices are quite a bit higher.

If I upgraded to a Duron 800 with a new socket A mombo it would cost me 640 bucks. The damn motherboard would cost like 350.

If I upgraded to a 900 K7 Athlon (slot A) the cpu would cost me 430 bucks.

1. Would the 900 work on my momb? The book does not say how high it would go.

2. Which would perform better. I reckon that they'd perform about the same, maybe with the 900 coming out a bit in front, but I was wondering what an expert would say.

3. Would I have any problems getting a Geforce2 MX (thinking of asking for one for Xmas) to work with the 900 combo?

Note: I probably will not upgrade this system again and in 2 years sell it when 64 bit becomes the norm or buy a completely new system.
😕

keep the system as it is for now

by the way what do you do with your sys? game? work?
if game - what game?
if work - what kinda programs do you run?

As the DDR is just 'nearly' out you might what to wait for that
I wont consider the Duron 800 as they are a 'high speed' duron and are priced close to Tbirds
either Duron 650/700 or Tbird 800+

if you game, i would recommend you getting a Geforce/MX or Raedon SDR (budget cards)
or GTS/Raedon DDR for high end card

dont get the slotA Tbird since they dont work with KX133 (usually)
dont get if it is a K75 also, since they are outdated

i personally would hang on to your system for now

thanx for your reply no one seems to ever answer me

I use my computer at home, for internet and games. If the tax office asks it is for work!

I don't really fps too much.

I am playing system shock 2 at the moment but, that it is about it, and it runs fantastic on my system.

I like role playing games like baldurs gate 2. Really what I want to do is be set up to play NeverWinter Nights when it comes out. I'd like to have enough horsepower to host games.

What I would like to do is just get a little more horsepower. I get the crappiest xmas gifts so I am going to buy myself something instead.

I have been thinking it might be better to just keep what I got.

I might have to look into overclocking... hmmn.

I was kinda hoping to stay under 500 bucks. What ever the price is it will be double downunder in australia.

That was why I was thinking that I'd like to get a 900 k7 the older kind. I could upgrade it without changing my mombo or memory. It would give my games about a 25% bump in performance

500 australian

500 american would buy a house now... ha. just kidding actually whatever the american price is it will be double here or relatively double

That's what I might do then... I might buy a Gforce 2 MX instead...

I wonder if that will work with my mombo... I can't see why not.

thanx for responding to me

I wonder if my board will handle a 900T?
MSI says it will
but then again does not a 900T need 133 memory?
the board is only built to house 100 memory?

cool, you know I might wait a bit for them to fall in price, around february, and buy one... I'd like to keep my system as current as possible

that will get me by like 2 years (I kinda expect a system to last 3 years nowadays, with one Major upgrade like this)... then the whole architecture will change to 64 bit anyways

once they make a decent console system I'll never buy a computer again!
