Help, I'm trapped in a land of mediocre clone bars!

I'm being dragged out to the bars again by my girlfriend and buddy and his girlfriend. Every bar in this city (Madison, WI) is pretty much identical: dim lighting, pop/rap playing loudly, the same drinks, same people, etc. This is a college town but still ...... there are no dance clubs that aren't "ghetto'd out" (ie, for unarmed people), no theme bars, etc. I am seriously bored standing around at some packed, smoke-filled bar for hours on end. Getting drunk lost its fun for the most part after I turned 21 and now that I have a girlfriend I don't see the point of going out to bars unless there's a point (dancing, concerts, etc) but alas we don't get anything cool like that around here.

I'm not sure why I'm sharing this other than that it is a thinly-veiled cry for someone to saw my legs off so I have an excuse not to go. Grrrr.

The memorial union has music and cheap beer. Just go there and chill with your girl for a while. You can bundle up and do the whole "long walk by the lake" thing.

Wasn't there a Club Amazon thing for dancing ? I'll admit, the KK, Brothers, the Nitty (worst bar people just have to drag you to... especially girls) are all similar though. The most "upscale" social college bar is the one down near the capitol on state street.... can't remember the name but it's divided into a front and a back section as it curves around the building. One of my favorite places was Stillwater, for lunch it's good, for drinks.... not so good on one of the going out nights.

State Bar & Grill? There are some cooler upper-class bars on the other side of the capitol that we've been to a few times but still it's most of the same. I just talked to a coworker who told me about a new club that opened up downtown that looks "safe" 🙂

Club Amazon is still there but is the place I was referring to that you don't want to go to whilst unarmed, if you know what I mean. 😉 The Union is a cool idea too - thanks!
