and my windows CD wont boot, im on a live CD and i tried to install to a removable HDD and it installed some messed up corrupt version of grub
i cant do fdisk /mbr cause i cant get windows to boot, is there a way to do it from linux?

Beside having to enable Universe in Synaptic instead of "Software sources" those instructions should work fine.

I just had this same problem. I was trying out Ubuntu, and then I went to try to install the trial version of Server 2003, and I couldn't boot to anything. I ended up pulling the hard drive SATA data cable, booting from windows CD, and then putting the SATA cable back in while the CD was loading. Worked great.

humm, i've never had a problem like that. Perhaps your hard drive is dieing? You might check out the linuxfromscratch documents on installing grub. They provide pretty good information on how you should install it which should allow you to fix any problem you are having.
