At a yet to be determined interval today I have been hearing a sequence of three beeps at successivly higher tone emanating from one of the machines in my office. "doodledeet" is as near as I can mimic the noise.
We have in the office 2 hp lh3 servers; a dell power edge 2100 server; 2 intel based servers; an Apc 650; 2 apc smart ups 1400; a com stream satelite interface; a cisco router; a fire box ; a smc 8 port ez switch; 4 smc ez stack 10/100 hubs; a smc ez stack controlling hub for the previous 4; plus 2 apc backups office 230's; and an industrial pc iac. plus more equipment, but those i mentioned are in the area i hear the noise coming from

It might by a UPS for one of your severs that is causing the beepinig. If my memory serves me correctly my UPS emitted a regular beep when the power went out one morning and I had a heck of a time trying to find the source before I realized the power was out (my pc was on still). I know in your case that the power is not out but it may be that a battery is going bad or a wiring fault.

just heard the noice again, i think it might be from the main board on my system, are intel mainboards known for having heat monitors my co worker had just walked out of the office, dunno what that beep is, hope it gets more frequent.

Should i fire up MBM in case it is my main board? and does mbm work with nt 4.0 sp 5?

Do you have any smoke alarms in the area? The noise you described sounds very similar to the noise my smoke alarm makes when the batteries get low.

The servers at my school also beep a lot. It sounds like its coming from one of the servers or the UPS.

you know we do have a system with a tape drive, thats locked up, it might be that, i'll check into it. no nokia phones in the area, and ill also check into the smoke alarm point

Look around and see if you have a smoke alarm with a battery going dead. These little babies make the same noise.
Bleep

I put odds on the UPS, ours at work tripped making the same noise, I had to hit the reset button.
I beleive it's drawing from the battery when the sound goes off until it's reset.
After hitting the reset button no more noise.

the noise came at too strange an interval to really detect it well, haven't heard it again today, will be listening for it.
