Help Identify what I injured

Basically, the last time I was running a felt like something was irritating the side of my knee, but I thought it was just the basketball shorts I has rubbing on that side during my entire run. When I run fast now, I get the same feeling, except more obvious. Its kinda hard to explain, but it feels like its on the surface, and as if the skin is tight and I am stretching it or something. imagine how it feels when you stretch a piece of skin with a scab on it...something like that.

Basically, I can only feel it when I try to really run, it feels like a pain on the surface or near surface on my left side of my left knee, and there is no bruising or any other obvious injury. Anybody ever experience this?
