powerbook, the ibook only supports 768MB of ram. Plus, the powerbook has DVI out and the ibook only has VGA out.

I'd say considering you just want it for basic stuff. Email/mp3, etc. Just get the G3 Ibook and if lasting long is important - spend the extra $$ on applecare or something to make sure in 3-4 years if something breaks, it gets fixed.

As a former iBook owner and current Powerbook owner I'd say Powerbook. Better construction and faster.

It basically comes down to G3 vs G4 IMO. I would save the extra $400 and buy the iBook. $400 is almost half the cost of the iBook. For word processing, internet, MP3, and DVD you won't notice any difference.

Now do both systems come with OS X Panther?

Why not get the G4 ibook? It's $999 with the edu discount.

800MHz PowerPC G4
256K L2 cache @ 800MHz
12-inch TFT Display
1024x768 resolution
256MB DDR266 SDRAM
30GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
32MB DDR video memory

Better video card, slot loading drive, and performance wise you wouldn't notice the difference between the G4 ibook and the 867MHz powerbook.

Right on. Plus, that model powerbook has heat issues. The G3 iBook has problems with its logic board that cause units to randomly stop working. This was fixed with the G4. I would go with the G4 Ibook in either the 12" or the 14" size.

the apple ibook g4 800 has much less processor cache than the powerbook if i recall correctly.

Its like the P4/Celeron - same clockspeed, but a world of difference

actually, the g4 867MHZ has 256K of L2 cache, which is what the g4 iBooks have. The next generation powerbooks came out with 512K L2 chaches.

640mb is max. As is the Powerbooks.
All iBooks & Powerbooks comes with 256mb standard. 128mb is built into the mobo, and 128mb is in the single sodim slot.

This is not true. There are models of the 15" and 17" PowerBooks that come with 512 MB of memory in their standard configurations. Also, the current 15" aluminum PowerBooks and 17" PowerBooks can accept up to 2 GB of memory. I'm not sure what the maximum amounts are for the 12" PowerBook or the current iBooks.

I stand corrected.
To be honest, i thought the iBooks and Powerbooks were the same apart from the casing and the processor.
