I dont know why this happened to me but it was the last thing I was ever expecting..........all of a sudden my hdd refuses to work...but the one good thing abt it is that my data is safe which is very important. It has pics of my gramps who passed away last year. Can anyone suggest what I should do looking at my mail to IBM?

Sir,

My IBM drive which was working perfectly until a few weeks back suddenly stopped working for reasons I do not know. The data on my drive is extremely important to me as it contains files pertaining to my business. Not only that it has family pictures which are invaluable to me. Currently I am residing in India due to business contraints. I again stress and point out that the data on my Hard Drive is very important. My HDD refuses to get detected for no reason. Like I mentioned earlier since the data is very important to me, I decided to send it to a local data recovery company here for the recovery of my data. The company got back to me saying that the drive's data is very much intact and there was no problem whatsoever with the media. They suggested that I get in touch with IBM and get the problem rectified since it was a minor one. The technical support guy said that a couple of ICs on the PCB of the hdd were damaged and said it was a minor problem. They said since the drive is in warranty please send it back to IBM. Now, what I would like to know is if my drive will be repaired or replaced? the data recovery company said most probably it will be repaired since it is a very minor problem. If it is repaired I have no problem whatsover since my data will be intact. But if it is replaced it will definetely be a major problem for me because like I said my data is very important. The data recovery firm also told me that recovery of data is not a problem at all and it can be done easily since there is no problem with the media. But they are sceptical because my drive is in warranty and they say that it is best to contact IBM on this situation which is why this mail is here. I sincerely await for advice on my current problem. Looking forward to a reply.

Thanking You

Raj

THe data recovery firm said that OE4 IC is not functioning. Here is a link to the picture of the IC.

Somebody pleaaaaaaasssse helppppp me!!!!!! I'll go insane if I lose those pics......recovery will cost me around 500usd minimum...... 🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁

Recovery is probably your only option.

What IBM will do is ship you a repaired drive - someone elses. They will throw your dead drive into a pile to be repaired, data wiped and that will go to another person later on.

Join the club! The 75GXP series, along with the 60GXP series, are known for a phenomenally high failure rate. Drives are dropping like flies and there's not much you can do except to back up everything and DEMAND a refund instead of a new unit. That way you can buy from a different company. I suggest Maxtor. 😀

Please - Please - Please spend the money!

Spend the money you have no other options.... I lost two modules of application data that I had due in
the next week for finals and poof I got hit with the "Sudden IBM Drive Death Syndrome"... My Prof. wasn?t
happy at all..... aka very bad grade for me..... I felt stupid like I was telling him my dog ate my homework

Anyway IBM spun me this yarn about my computers auto shut down wasn?t giving my drive enough time
to save start-up data ( BS BS BS )... I went as far as to join the Class Action Law Suite

All drives lost in 3 months ( I started with 3 - 30GB 75GXP's and 2 - 75GB 75GXP's )
3 - 30GB 75GXP
4 - 75GB 75GXP

and when they ran out of the 75GXP series I was swapped the 60GB version for my 75's (not happy)
2 - 60GB 60GXP - lost

Right now I have 4 - 60GB 60GXP's in the box's they came in, and 1 - 30GB 75GXP running in a system...

The fact one drive is still running is the shocking part been over a year since it was last replaced... Not sure
if anyone else has had this luck but when I stopped using them as primary drives I got a longer life span
from each drive....

In all the failures I lost about 300+GB of data mainly since the drive I used to back up my data died the day
after the primary died.... So now I use RAID plus I back up to different makes of HD's....

Good Luck!
