I can't book into Vista now.

I thought that I would be able to do a Vista repair using the cd but it doesn't work.

What is the best practices approach to fixing Vista after replacing the system board?

The new system is a core 2 duo (e6420) on a Gigabyte 965P DS3.
2 GB ram. MSI 8600 gts.

It was a vista upgrade ove Windows XP. I called Microsoft. They said I should do a reinstall and that I had to install Windows XP first.

Is there a better way?

You can't change the motherboard with a different one and expect windows to still work. You have to reinstall.

In Windowx XP you could do a "repair" installation from the Windows CD. I tried in Vista but it didn't work.
