HELP!! I think W2k machine hit by virus. PLEEEZE...

Something just went horribly wrong. I don't know if it was a virus, but here goes.

Stable W2k machine 9 months old, xp 1800+, 512mb DDR, Soyo Dragon Plus, Maxtor d740 40Gb 7200, One HD installed, no RAID, using NTFS. I was installing Roxio CD Creator 5 basic, then installed CD Creator 5 Platinum over it once I found the disk. My CDRW is too new for the ECDC 5 Platinum, so I DLed the update from Roxio. Would not install, saying something like NO compatible product found. I shutdown cold and restarted; still the update installer would not recognize the 5 plat. installation. So I uninstalled the 5 basic, then uninstalled the 5 platinum, and restarted warm to clear decks and start over with the 5 plat. install.

When restarting, I get POST, W2k startup screen with progress bar, then BLUE SCREEN:

"STOP: 0x0000007B ... blah, blah
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:

Check for viruses on your comjputer. Remove any newly installed HD or HD Controllers.
Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for HD corruption, and then restart your computer.
"

I had a McAfee Emergency Boot disk which I used. It scanned the C drive using the definitions on the diskette and found no viruses. HOWEVER, MORE TROUBLING, it reported two MBRs on the C drive and NO OTHER FILES!

Am I dead? Who has seen this before? What should I do to investigate? I have McAfee Internet Security 4.0, Norton Systemworks 2002 Professional, and Norton Internet Security 2002 sitting here on CD. And I have the original W2k install CD as well as my WinXP Pro on CD.

I am afraid to do anything else to it until I hear from you guys. Help, please.🙁:Q

Your install sounds like it is hosed but your data should be fine, it is not a virus, it is a problem I have seen before with easy cd creator 5 and you also get it when you change controllers on the mb.

It is not a virus.

Thanks, but how do I go about getting the machine to reboot in W2k? It stops with this blue screen.

:Q
Is it safe to run chkdsk /F without messing up anything? Do I have to fix an MBR or what?

waiting for help...

You should be able to do a repair install without losing any of your files. All you have to do is start setup like normal but when it finds the partition with the OS on it tell it to repair and not to do a clean install. This should work, I have done it many times before. Take care and lmk if you need more info or help

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, kehi.

Would you set the bios to boot from CD and put the W2k disk in before restarting?

Do the search on the error, you may find some information on it. Especially since its been discussed in fairly good detaul many many times 🙂

Personally, when I got it, I just formatted and started over.

Thanks, and searching is one thing I did not remember to do when I was in panic mode looking at the BSOD.😱
I found some good stuff.🙂
