HELP i think i fried my CPU

i just built this comp everything powers up but when it gets to the dectect the system disc it freezes also i got a AMD xp 2800 barton suppose to be 2.0 mhz but its only reading 1.25 mhz maybe i put too much thermal greese? other specs are mobo is ECS k7vta3 and seagate hd 40 gig and 256 ram

!) Check Auto detect for hard drive in Bios
2) Check Hard drive/ CD or DVD Master/Slave jumper is set right.
3) Are your HD-CROM/DVD ribbon connector connected right. Red Stripe to #1 pin.

How much thermal gease did you put on the CPU? Normally you only need a little bit, just apply a very thin layer on top of the CPU Core. As soon as the Heat Sink is installed, all the exess will come out of the side of The CPU Core.

Also, your processor issue sounds like an FSB issue... Might want to correct that as well, but wait until you've got a hard drive first ;)

If it detects your processor, chances are its not fried. Did you make sure your jumpers are correct? Does the BIOS screen detect the drive (or any drives) at all?
