I'm currently trying to find a part time job and I'm looking for a few suggestions. I've been thinking about maybe looking into whats involved as a paramedic. Anyone here familiar with that type of work? I've been doing IT work for almost 8 years now and I'm ready to get into something different but I'm not really sure where to look at. Actually I would'nt mind doing part time IT work but that seems to be scarce these days.

Thanks for any suggestions

You need to do this:

Get an advanced CPR card

Take an EMT-B(asic) course, it is a semester course and includes some ER time.

Work as an EMT for 2 years in a 911 system. (required by most schools)

Go to paramedic school (average 1,000-1,400 hours of training). This will include 100(?) hours of ER, surgery, OB/GYN rotations and 120 hours internship on an ambulance with a primary 911 responder ambulance. Through medic school you will obtain your PHTLS (pre hospital trauma life support), ACLS (advanced cardiac life support), and PALS (pediatric advanced life support) certs. These have to be renewed every two years with 8 hours training each, as well as keeping your CPR current.

I may have left something out, but that is most of it.

What type of schedule do you normally work? Whats a typical month for you in terms of emergencies, calls, etc..?

...forgot to mention something.

You should check what your system requires in your area to work on an ambulance. When I was in SF, both people had to be paramedics on the ambulance. Just over the bridge it was paramedic/EMT-B. Here in Las Vegas, it is paramedic/EMT-I(ntermediate). An intermediate can do IVs and two or three medications, while paramedics can give around 24-28 meds depending on your system.

Call your local health district and ask what is required to work on an ambulance in your area.

We are one of the busiest systems in Las Vegas, we run 8-15 calls per day, and transport 6-10 of them.

Work schedule is four 12 hour shifts per week.

Pay is quite different depending on where you are. It can range from ~20K to 32K per year to start (as a paramedic) to start.
