Help: I lost all video on my PC

I swapped the cable on my Viewsonic LCD and put in a VGA cable - removing the DVI cable. I hooked it back to my computer and lost all video. Nothing will display - not even the splash screen when it's POSTing. It is going into windows - I hear the wndows chime. I tried an older CRT monitor - nothing.

What happened? The fan is spinning on the video card.

It's possible that your VGA port is set up as a secondary display output since you were using the DVI port.. Boot up with DVI as primary and your CRT on VGA port as secondary. Once you boot up, enable your second monitor(CRT) in display properties, you should have picture on VGA port now. Now set the CRT as primary monitor. Shut down, disconnect your DVI and you VGA should now work at least in windows, you still may not get the POST though (some video cards do that)...

I was in the middle of taking apart another computer and using this machine to try to recover the data from the one I took apart.
