Help - I like a chick car!

I have a 2006 BMW 330i that I bought as a certified pre-owned car last year. I love my car. It is dark blue over black leather, with a manual transmission, sport, premium, and cold-weather packages, and various other odds and ends. It's an highly satisfying little sports sedan which handles amazingly well, while still being quite comfortable and practical.

Lately I've been having some issues with it (it turns out a vapor barrier in one of the doors failed, so water was seeping into the compartment where various electronics are stored, leading to a host of strange problems), and brought it in for warranty service.

As a loaner, they gave me a decked-out 2009 BMW X3 crossover (BMW calls it a "sport activity vehicle"). I'm a little embarrassed by how much I'm enjoying it!

This car was not well-reviewed when it was released (I guess in part because it's not suitable for off-road use despite looking like an SUV, and has a brittle ride for an SUV), and I am not at all an SUV enthusiast, but this thing is really nice. I am 6'4", so getting into and out of my 330i (which has a factory-lowered sport suspension) is a bit of a chore - obviously the X3 is easier in that respect (though the stupid running boards actually make it harder, since I have to step over them). The seats are VERY comfy and it has a host of amenities (heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, etc.) that I like and that are not included with my car. I guess the main thing is that it drives, more or less, like a 3 series, while having a lot more room. Admittedly the handling is not at the level of my sport-package-equipped car, but it's nicer to drive than any of the host of Japanese sedans I've owned over the years (which have included, most recently, a V6 Accord and a Maxima SE).

At the end of the day, this is a bit of a chick car (it helps a bit that it's black over black leather), and has more in common with a minivan than a true Jeep. It's clearly getting a little long in the tooth as a model, so its electronics are a generation behind what's in my 330i (though admittedly they work, whereas my own have been a little hinky of late). It has an automatic (though I believe a stick is available), which I have a hard time abiding (though it is indisputably a really really nice automatic - it's a 6-speed Tiptronic and the best auto I've ever used). It's also not the prettiest car - in fact I think it's the ugliest current BMW, and that's saying a lot.

All of that being said, if I had kids I'd be delighted to drive one of these, warts and all. Now I just hope they can get to the bottom of the problems with my car . . .

Oh man, is this you??? (Warning: ATOT Garbage link) :)

There's no way in hell I'd get an X3 over your 330i. That thing is the 2nd ugliest thing BMW makes right now (only thing uglier is an X6) + you'd lose the handling and manual tranny from your current car. :(

Oh, I know all of the above. I'd never swap my 330i (shown in a glamor shot from the track at a BMW CCA event) for one of these. Actually (and I consider this a good thing), if my 330i keeled over, I think I'd get almost the identical 335i, with the same options. In the alternate reality where I had small kids, though, the X3 would be on my short list . . .

I do drive what I like (my 330i)! I do, also, think the X3 is a chick car. That wouldn't necessarily prevent me from driving one, though.

Are you saying there's no such thing as a chick car? You'd be perfectly happy driving a New Beetle if it served your needs?

how does a new beetle serve anyone's needs? it's singular function is to visually appeal to chicks and homos.

now the X3, on the other hand, is actually a functional vehicle.

Yeah, that is one ridiculous POS. They're threatening to make an M version, which would be wrong on so many levels . . .

The problem with the X3 is the 5 Series wagon does everything the X3 does, but better.

And the X6 looks like a pregnant turd.

I assume you are secure in your sexuality. If so, then drive what you want, regardless of what people think.

The 5 series wagon starts $15K more expensive than the X3, and because it's much lower (which is admittedly better from a handling standpoint), it's far more difficult for installing and removing kid seats and kids.

I'm not saying I would buy an X3 - I prefer my 3 series - but I do like it a lot for what it is.

Man when my X5 was in for annual service they could only give me a 328i xdrive (snowing that day). I was severely underwhelmed by how common of a car it is (compared to many sedans I've driven) yet how high it's priced. I was hoping to get at least the X3 to try or maybe even an X6 (mmm twin turbos). ;)

Anyway, the X3 is probably surpassed by many competitors right now. And like you say it's also ugly (pre-facelift right?). They only enhanced it a bit to keep up with competition - nothing revolutionary. Skip the X3 and step into a 2010+ X5 (facelift, new idrive, and mmm... dynamic performance control)... the best SUV out there unless you're willing to pay $20k more for a Toureg... err Cayenne. ;)

Both X5 & X6 ///M are already in testing and will be revealed next month for October delivery. 550hp in the X5. $130k euros... USD not yet determined. :D

///mmm M Power (it hasn't even hit 6th yet)

Especially considering they're not going to make an M Z4 any time soon. :(

It sucks that even "driving purist" company is having to go with what the consumer is buying...although it is hard to believe their is a huge market for an M X5 and M X6...but I'm no marketing person. No one seems to be buying the old Z4...so maybe that is the reason not to go with a M Z4...especially when the twin-turbo engine does such an amazing job on its own.

From what I have read, BMW signed off on the X5 and X6 M shit before the economy tanked off--this Z4 M thing seems to be the direct result of when everyone shat themselves and panicked.

That said, I don't know how many people are going to go after this X6 M.

This.

It's a 2006 330i (I bought it last April as a Certified Pre-Owned car with 13K miles) in Monaco Blue over black leather with 6-speed manual, Sport, Premium, and Cold Weather packages, OEM alarm, BMW iPod integration kit, M3 steering wheel and ZHP-kit shift knob.
