HELP! I just dropped my mountain bike and now I can't fix it! [UPDATE: Fixed!!]

The gears are off, and I tried to adjust it, but I just can't, the part keeps hitting the spokes in the rear wheel. I also can't put it on lower gears, it just stops, or gets more difficult to turn to the point where I can't turn the knobs anymore to shift gears. Does anyone have any hints on how to adjust this? Is there a webpage out there? I tried googling and came up with very little help.

Thanks in advance!

edit:

Fixed! Thanks to Brutuskend and newbiepcuser for helping me out. I first bent my rear derailluer like brutus said, then the links provided bye newbie helped me adjust it (derailluer) perfectly such that is doesn't touch the spokes anymore. It now can shift gears flawlessly!

I do think I need new cables though.

From your obvious lack of knowledge of bike parts, I can assure this is the correct thing to do:

1. Take bike to bike store
2. Ask them to fix it
3. Pay them money
...

Profit!

is there anyway I can adjust it myself?

yes, but it involves possibly cutting the wire, bending the gears, a real pita if you dont know what you are doing

how much do you think it will cost me to get it repaired at a shop?

honestly it depends on what is wrong, I'd take it to a reliable shop and have them look at it. they should be able to tell you what is wrong with it and how much it'll cost to fix

Small repairs like that usually take about 30 minutes or so at the local shop, here, and they cost about $30-$40, depending on if new parts are involved.

Where's Brutus?

Sounds like you bent the dérailleur tab on the frame.

Make sure the dérailleur cage (The thing with the two little toothed wheels) is parallel with the rear wheel. Bend it back if you have too.

I don't recommend this but you might try here. If you don't have the tools, etc just take it to shop and pay them.

Wonder if its mess up cause its retail bike. Cause I've slammed my Specialized Hard Rock pretty hard on occassions.

Loosen the back wheel by unlocking it, untangle any mess cause by the chain. Tighten the wheel in place. See if the wheel can spin. If the derailer is shot, then you will need a new one.

If the cable got pulled out of whack, then you will need the FAQ I link below.
rear derailer adjustment

If the derailer is jack try this link
derailer alignment.

Yeah, that's a bike alright.

I meant pics of your messed up one so we can see exactly what "that part" and "that thing" are 🙂

I don't think pics will show what is wrong, I'd needa video, its the rear derailleur that is touching the spokes. when I shift to lower gears.

haha agreed, i'll go check that now, the links provided above were really helpful. I had to adjust my H and L screws, I'll check out what you have recommended too. If all fails, off to the shop I go =\.

Sorting a derailleur is not difficult really, but if it's bent then you might be in trouble, as when you bend it back, it may cause a crumpling effect in the metal as it's quite thin.

Be careful! 🙂

Considering most (non-uber)road bikes are ~20 LBs, I'd say "easily"
