Help! I have no sound...

I bought a used, Medion-built PC several months ago, and haven't had any problems but one: it won't make a sound! I have tried everything I can think of to get it to do so (aside from buying a sound card), including OS (windows xp) settings and BIOS settings. The motherboard has onboard audio, and the person I bought it from said he had installed a dedicated card as well, which he removed before selling the computer to me, so perhaps that is affecting it (though, again, I have tried messing with the BIOS settings). So, I basically need to get the onboard audio working, or determine that it's totally screwed and I need to buy a sound card. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and please let me know what other info would be helpful.

Check in Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers to see if there are any question marks or exclamation points indicating a missing or incorrect driver for your onboard sound. If so, see if your motherboard maker's site has current drivers. While you're there, check for BIOS updates, as well.

You could also search Google for the model number of your motherboard and words like sound, audio, etc.

Good luck. 🙂

If the previous owner installed a dedicated audio card, he probably set a jumper on the mobo to disable on board sound. If you have a manual for it, check the layout and check for such a jumper. Or, if the seller is local, have him or her reset it for you. He or she should have done that when they pulled the dedicated audio card.
