have around $2500 Canadian... about $1600 US to blow on a new PC.

Something like this sound good?

AMD Thunderbird 1.4 (oc'ed to 1.6+) w/taisol big @ss HS
Asus/Epox DDR Motherboard (forgot what it's called)
768 MB Crucial DDR pc2100 Memory (it's so damn cheap!)
Hercules GeForce 3 ($$$)
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
20 GB 7200 IBM Drive (OS/Apps) (from old system)
60 GB 5400 WD Driver (Storage)
Linksys NIC 10/100
Ricoh 6x4x20 (from old system)
Asus 8x DVD (from old system)
InWin Q500 w/300w (sparkle) PS (from old system)

Any comments? Looking to buy in the next few weeks.. .peace out.

I think your referring to the EPoX 8K7A for the motherboard. Everything looks good, except I would go with a 431W Enermax power supply if you plan on overclocking that 1.4.

wow, u don't think a 300w Sparkle (powerman) PS is enough? hmmm... What the heck will a Athlon 4 MP in dual require??? 900W ps! 😉

What OS will you be using? Anything higher than 512 can cause Win98 to mess up, also the difference between 512/768 is negligable, stick with 512 and buy something else you like, like a 60GB 7200 RPM drive, I really don't think you'll like 5400 when using a 60GB HDD. Also I vote that you get the Epox 8K7A, I'll be picking one of those up soon.

Yep, go with 512MB RAM. It's enough and the less RAM-sticks you have in your system, the more stable the setup is...

I wouldn't go for the Herkules GF3...go for the ELSA920 or Gainward PowerPack!!!

Consider implementing IDE-RAID...2x30 instead of 60 e.g. 🙂

Ya know, I'm starting to change my mind about how you guys spend money like water around here. I mean, you do waste A LOT of money, but it's relative. A hobby is a hobby and you only live once I guess. Look how much people pour into new cars, stereo systems or boats for example. Even the hobby of golf or bowling sucks quite a bit of fundage.

But your list is sorely lacking something that just might NOT be such a waste... a nice big high quality monitor! And while you're at it, maybe a digital camera and/or scanner. How about a stand alone FAX machine or a copier? Stuff like that will still be useful long after that current PC you're thinking of building is junk. Well, just some food for thought...

no need for a game theater unless you're going to be hooking it up to some huge speakers or need a breakout box for a lot of audio equipment. I love my game theater, but kinda wish I had gotten something else, because of the huge cable that attaches the PCI Card to the breakout box, but other than that performance is great and I love the sound!!! I would definately setup a RAID array, maybe two IBM 60GXP 40GB drives in Raid O or something. Also if you get either of those boards you'll be limited to 512MB PC2100 anyway, unless you can find the much more expensive 512MB DIMMS, which I wouldn't recommend at all! Other than that the system looks pretty sweet.

wow, good responses! 🙂 Anyway, i've got a samsung 950p and a samsung 900NF hear... the NF of course will be for this system. As for the sound system, i've got a Monsoon MM-1000. It is good enough for me, although not 5.1, it has fantasic 2.1 sound. I might hold on the geforce3 cuz i need something with s-video input. And yes, i'll be using either WinXP (don't have yet) or i can use Win2k pro (currently using). I'm the type of guy who doesn't reset his system for months at a time and have like 30 windows open... so 768 Mgs is gonna be used well...i'm currently using 400 Megs 🙂 i've got 512 megs on this msi kt7 pro2a. Anyway, thx for the comments... oh the santa cruz is very cheap here in toronto, only $58 canadian ($38 US). Peace out.

i think the epox board only has 2 ddr slots. the asus might have more. i'd only go with a half a gig of ram anyway.
