Where is the option like msconfig in Win98 to have selective startup. Some stupid programs have put icons near the clock and I can't get rid of em. I don't want them to start in the first place. Ah, I'm so used to Win98 but W2k is so much faster and more stable for me. It acutally saves RAM and and utlizies my 10k RPM hard disk correctly :D

To remove the items "by the clock", right click the icon and choose delete. Those are just shortcuts. They don't actually start until you click them.

I'm talking about the icons in the stupid task bar. They start up w/ windows but they are not in the start menu section. In win 98 (from msconfig) you can stop the progams from even loading.

For example one of the programs is: Creative Labs Audio HQ that came with my soundblaster drivers. Task manager shows its running in the backgroud. I wanna get rid of all these like I did in win 98 by disabling them in W2k. I can close these stupid programs but some of them don't have disable options so they load everytime the system does.

Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services and look for the ones that are running at startup. Right click on the service in question and set it from Automatic to either Manual or Disabled. That should do you. Read the help file to determine the difference between Manual and Disabled.

You need to regedit...Its under HKCU (Current User)/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Runonce

Its basically like the startup folder.... I have nothing in there myself except MBM 5.

You all need to check not only the start menu of your username, but the start menu folders of "All Users" and "default user". These can be found in the documents and settings folder.

Many programs that start automatically are put in the all users folder, not just your usernames start folder.

Also many times, if you right click on the offending programs in the tray they will have an option to exit, and also to keep it from coming back again--the logitech icon that logitech mice use for easy access to the configs is one--you open it up and it has a check box that says something like show in tray--you uncheck it, and it goes away.

Very rarely will you have to do any registry editing to get rid of programs in the tray.

I haven't used Win2k yet but I know that it is based on NT 4.0. Rogue is right in that the programs are probably run up as services. Control Panel -> Services and look for the program name. Right-click and change automatic to either disabled or manual. Then reboot to check. You also need to check for shortcuts to these programs in the "startup" folders in "all users" and default user" under Start -> Settings -> Task Bar - > Advanced.

RichieZZZZ,

You might want to give Mike Lin's freeware utility Startup Control Panel a shot. It shows each non-service startup item in tabbed windows which indicate WHERE the item starts from. You can temporarily disable, permanently disable, temporarily delete, or permanently delete each item. There are executable and control panel applet versions of the utility. I have tested it extensively under Win95, NT4 SP3 and above, and W2K with and without SP1. Makes more sense and takes a lot less time to use a simple and effective utility than manually futzing around with all the startup locations.

Regards,
Jim
