HELP! I cant play half life 2!

Hey people. Ive completed half life 2 at uni using the wireless there, then they built a firewall stopping steam from conncting. Idiot me didnt bother to put steam in offline mode so i cant connect through the wireless anymore to do this, so i dragged my ton weight pc home this easter to use the super speedy 56k connection here.... and steam still wouldnt connect. I even re-installed half life 2 + steam and it wont connect. Help! im stuck and all i wanna do is play the fricking game i paid £30 for.... in single player, btw the 56k is aol (yea its crap but parents like it) and i got version 7.0 on this comp.

try running the executable with the -steam and -console switches?

Hmm ok, but what does that mean? and how do i do that? lol

put -steam -console in the command line after the executable..
