Hi I have been a long time at reader and now a first time poster. This is the only thing I have ever done with computers that almost left me suicidal. I just bought an abit nv7-133r, 512 ddr mushkin hi perf ram, and xp 1600 from newegg. I have been up for 3 days now hopelessly trying to fix the problem.

My xp 1600 1.4ghz is showing as a 1050mhz cpu.I changed the fsb in bios to 133 and already installed the newest bios but when i start up bios shows my chip running at 1050mhz still and if i try to change it to a 1600 or 133fsb in bios in with say chip is unusable but it will still let me continue to windows where it will then show it still as a 1050mhz athlon. Please can anyone help?Id love to enjoy this system for the one free month before I have to leave home for along time. I would be so appreciative if anyone could give me some input on this problem.Ive searched the web throughly but all i find are posts of people who just didnt set the fsb to 133 in forums. I built 3 systems with the same case, mobo, chip and ram for friends the only differnce is my hd which is a maxtor 40 gig and they had 80 gigs.I think i remember them all posting as 1600xps when i set the fsb to 133.Please help.

(Cut and paste of my reply to your post in Tech Support and Motherboards)

1.4 / 1.33 = 1.05, so it sounds like your BIOS is still set for 100 MHz. Go back to the BIOS, and make sure the FSB is set for 133 MHz. If that work, try loading the DEFAULT or FAILSAFE settings. If you have to go further, discharge the CMOS and let it reset itself.

Hope that helps. Good luck. :)

The first thing to ask is:

Did you unlock the CPU yet to overclock it?
No? - well set the BIOS for the XP1600+ setting (assuming it has one).

Yes? perhaps the unlocking was successful? My XP1600 with run at 1000 something Mhz also if I do not choose the correct CPU speed.

You need to choose the manual setting of the CPU (USER DEFINE) - not the predefined XP1600, 1700 etc etc.

You need to choose x12 x13 etc and the corresponding FSB 133 etc etc.

Wellerdball,

I have the EXACT same problem with my new ASUS A7N266-C board, 256 2700DDR, and AMD XP 1600+!! I have been going to different forums to find anyone with the problem or who knows how to fix it.

I initially had some problems with WinXP Pro after I got all the components from my old sys together in the new box. I already had XP Pro (upg from 98SE) on the Maxtor 10Gb HDD and when I changed mobo's/processor/RAM combo, XP went into infinite reboots. I did a REPAIR of XP from the CD-ROM and got everything working great, except that my AMD now showed up as only running at 1050Mhz, just like yours. But I distinctly remembered seeing it at 1.4Ghz during the myriad of reboots before I fixed the XP prob. I remember that on one of the reboots, the BIOS came up by itself and gave me a message that said the processor had automatically detected some problems and had reduced it's speed to protect itself. However, now I cannot get the BIOS to allow me to change the clock multiplier and I don't see any FSB setting in the BIOS to allow 100 or 133 or ANYTHING.

My BIOS will let me alter the Clock Multiplier numbers, but it won't let me SAVE the settings, it always reverts to 10.5. I guess it should be correctly set at 10.5 as per which is what the value is currently, but I could not verify the FSB setting as either 100 or 133, does anyone know where I can see/change the setting on this ASUS A7N266-C board?? I have BIOS revision 1001D...

You are the first person I've seen on 4 different forums to complain about the exact same problem I have been experiencing. Hopefully, we can both get some helpful information here. I'm going to try doing a reset of the defaults in the BIOS to see what happens. If that doesn't work, I'll do a CLEAR CMOS. I'll post results...

Did you have any difficulties during your build of this current system????

I think theres a jumper on your motherboard (read the manual to check), that sets 100 or 133fsb..

Check that out. My epox has it, I remember being able to boot at 133fsb even though the jumper was at 100. Then I found out about the jumper, moved it over, there was no difference, but that could the problem on your motherboard.

It seems that I remember reading an early nForce MB review that mentioned the multiplier couldn't be set manually. I didn't know if that had been changed or not.

I do not think it is the multiplier problem. Its just he can't get his FSB at 133mhz. As I don't think a locked AthlonXP could run at anything other than its default multiplier.

Well no reply from wellerdball yet, but other that ensuring the BIOS does indeed support the XP1600+ (which I am assuming it does?) have you actually re-set the CMOS since you put together this system?

Power-off, un-plug power cable, short CMOS jumper several times.

But CMOS jumper back to operating position, plug power cable back in.

Hit power button and check what the boot speed is?

If it is still at 1050Mhz then hit Delete and try to set the CPU manually.

The only thing to add to gtd 2000's post is to be sure to "save and exit" when leaving the bios, otherwise the changes won't take effect. Checking the Abit site, your board is jumperless, except for "clear cmos" and supports XP's.

Might try some other changes in the bios, just to see if it will save at all. If it won't, send it back.....

My cpu booted up as 1050mhz too...had to manually set settings in my bios for an ABIT KX7.
