Help - HP 6L laser printer - not printing!

I just bought a used HP 6L (minus manual) which I thought was a good deal, but now I'm thinking maybe it was a rotten deal, as I can't seem to get it to print. Both the printer & USB cables are properly connected, and in fact WinXP has the 6L defined and checkmarked amid "Installed Printers & Other Hardware". But the topmost [error?] light remains lit on the printer, despite that I have paper in the feed bin, and when I tried sending a WordPad document to print, nothing happened.

Can someone please advise? Is there something I may have overlooked? :(

Can you hear sounds from the printer indicating that its received the job and is trying to process it?

What, if any, are the errors you see in the print queue?

I tried finding the manual but couldn't. All I got was this:
http://search.hp.com/gwuseng/query....f=1&qt=download+manual&submit.x=13&submit.y=8

I tried all sorts of searches on their site.

I also tried the fixyourownprinter site but it didn't address my problem

When I tried sending stuff to print I didn't hear any noise. Nothing. Dead.

Is there anyone else here who has been up against this problem with their HP 6L? I heard there were notorious problems with the 6L paper feed (even before buying it) but I never heard of it NOT printing at all! I'm wondering if I was gypped with a lemon. I have this TERRIBLE luck that despite thorough research prior to buying computer stuff, in the end, I wind up with lemons anyway. For example, I'm now stuck with a Samsung LCD that electrocutes me due to its non-dimmability & I paid $300 for it. I hate it with a passion, and I also hate the Dell/WinXP combo which always gives me some new shock; things aren't progressing they're digressing, and sometimes I think I might be better off just living simply again without all the high tech and without the endless unanticipated shocks. I'm weary of being a guinea pig.

You're not a guinea pig, just a noob. :)

Again, do you ever see any errors in the queue?

And what happens when you press the button on the console to print a test page?

I may be a perpetual noob  but I never had this with HPs I had at my old job, nor with more recent Okidata OL400 laser, nor with the Epson Stylus Photo "toy" which ran out of ink, whereupon I decided to buy another laser.

I don't know where the heck the button on the console is supposed to be - for printing a test page.
I see one thingie sticking out below three light-indicator panels on the left.
Then another thingie sticking out near the base on the left, which I imagine is supposed to disengage something or other for replacing the toner?
Believe me, I had already tried pressing both of them, but nothing happ...

Hey, ONE MINUTE! guess what, I fooled around a bit, and after again pressing the lower thingie, somehow I succeeded in flipping the front facade backward, whereupon I realized there's no toner inside the printer!!! :Q

 So I checked inside the packing again, and now noticed the used toner cartridge inside grey plastic packing (which was camouflaged among the rest of the grey packaging) & which I'm now terrified of opening for fear of unleashing I know not what.

The guy never told me in the email that he was packing the toner separately. So, where do I go from here? Is there anyone here with experience at installing used toner cartridges into the HP 6L? Also, does it need to avoid exposure to light?

you're kidding...

Just stick the toner in there and hold down the button for a few secs and see if a test page comes out.

OK everyone, thanks loads for all your advices! So much for embarrassment (though I can't tell you how camouflaged the packing was - sorta like a birds eye view of a snowball on top of a snowball). It's a bit like the classic joke of "hey - is the plug connected?"

But this pales beside what happened today in the store. There were 2 guys in conversation & I asked one of them - "Excuse me - do you work here?" So he says, "No I don't!" then he added: "Why? is it because I look Russian? Is that why you asked me?" Taken aback, I responded: "Well, you're not wearing anything!" (too late I added "you're not wearing a coat" - they were already joking about it

Anyway, back to the topic at hand:

After I updated the guy about the toner, he said UPS requires packing toner separately & he gave me a link to the 6L instruction manual, which I followed, and it's now working fine.

(off-topic) Now on to my other crises, such as my electrocutingly-bright LCD (& trying to find older "normal" CRTs) - and my Preview+Printing out of wack & truncating text on right & spreading over too many pages. BTW, that was only since I'd connected the old spare CRT, though when I reconnected the lethal LCD to try out the useless Overlay, my Preview still remained out of wack.
