Help..how to unlock a folder under WinXP Pro?

Hi,

I need the community's help in salvaging as much data as possible here.

The situation:

My co-worker's computer all of a sudden won't boot. All standard methods tries..safe mode and all...nothing. Seems like the WinXP install has been corrupted since it just keeps on re-booting.

Anyways, I took the drive out and put it in my external enclousre to see if we can get to the data. Well I can see what is on there but her folder under "Documents and Settings" is not allowing me access to it.

We have WinXP Pro SP1 on it. I have the same on my laptop.

How can I unlock this folder and copy it over to my laptop so we can safely re-install win XP. We don't want to take the risk of "repairing" Win XP for fear of data loss. She has not backed up over two months!

What happens when you are "not allowed access" to the folder? Does it say "Access Denied"? Since you have XP Pro you should be able to claim the file when you turn off Simple File Sharing... I assume you may have tried this though. Apart from that, I can't think of anything off the top of my head... was the folder encrypted?

-fs

Turn off SImple File Sharing??? I have not tried this. WHere do I do this?

When I attach the drive, I get letter F for it. I can access every other folder except the one with the User name..something to do with the User Name I guess since we all run our computers with usernames and password protection.

When I click "Docs and Settings > Melissa" I get..Access Denied.

I am gonna try and find the Simple File Sharing and search in Software and OS for answers.

you would need to login as the local administrator to that computer and have the token associated with that user account,

i can tell you how to resolve this issue but i doubt you have the ability to do so.

you would take the harddrive and put it in a linux workstation and then mount -t msdos /dev/hda%% /mnt/windows

and then tar -cvf the data and then cp -R it to some other local to be extracted...
