help- how to remove a thermal pad on socket A Athlon?

My comp has started freezing [no blue screen] every few hours. I'm assuming this is a heat issue?
I've got an Athlon 900 on an Epox 8KTA3. It was the retail cpu, so I used the included hsf and thermal pad. It was installed about 1 year ago.

How do I remove the hsf from the cpu without damaging it so I can use Arctic Silver or thermal grease instead of the already attached pad?

And when I originally built it, I tried to use a different hsf, but there wasn't enough room on the mobo for it to fit.
Is there a better hsf that will fit on that Epox 8KTA3?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
