I just got this Rio mp3 player as a gift for a friend, there is a $20 rebate, so I want to open the package and cut out the UPC.

Since the mp3 player comes inside this annoying hard to open plastic packaging, I am wondering is there any trick to open the packaging without actually destorying it? Any advice? Any tips? Help!

How so? I think he just wants to get what he needs to claim the rebate before giving it as a gift to his friend. As for the package... is it one of those hard plastic shells? Sometimes you can just pull the two sides apart with a little force, and re-close the plastic button/snap things that hold it together, but you risk the plastic ripping too.

If it is the kind I am thinking of you cannot open it unless you rip some plastic. It is closed my melting the plastic together. I would just repackage it in something else like a small cardboard box. I really don't think they will mind. If you do it right they wont even know at all. Make it look like you bought it OEM and it shipped in the box. :p

Many people would just skip the rebate in your case.

Maybe you can acquire a gift receipt and let him send in the rebate. Just a little reminder to get you something when the rebate comes in.

If it's anything like what I got my RioVolt in, your best bet would probably be with an x-acto knife like someone had suggested. Mine came in one of those hard plastic shells with the melted edges, and was a total b!tch to get open. I had to use kitchen shears and a rather sharp knife to get it out, and after it was all said and done I think the packaging was in 4 or 5 pieces.

Why can't they just use good old cardboard boxes. :disgust:
