[help] How to initialize NIC (to get and hold an IP address) in windows XP without plugging in a network cable?

I have a software that requires the computer's NIC to hold an IP address for it to work.
In windows xp, even when I assigned an IP address in TCP/IP setting, the system does not have an ip address unless I connect it to a hub or another PC

On my desktop, I can just connect it to a hub.
Now, how can I get an IP for my laptop withou a hub or wireless connection?

thanks.

I had a similar problem when using VMWare...

If you don't have a cable attached to the physical NIC on the host machine Windows would disable the networking because it assumes that if you don't have a cable connected you mustn't be on a network (which is an incorrect assumption because you should be able to have a virtual network between the host machine and a number of virtual clients running on it) :disgust:

You could try installing the a loopback adaptor which is essentially a virtual network card to see if that helps.

Whoo, thats interesting! I searched high and low at the time trying to figure out how to keep the network running even when no cable was attached, in the end I gave up and kept my old 8 port brick (very old DLink hub!) on the whole time so I could network between the virtual machines.

I've since sidestepped the problem as I have a router serving the internet connection at all times but its good to know that media sense can be disabled.

Cheers matey! 🙂

Oh and abovewood - don't cross post
