:
I have a software that requires the computer's NIC to have an IP address for it to work.
In windows xp, even when I assigned an IP address in TCP/IP setting, the system does not have an ip address unless I connect it to a hub or another PC

On my desktop, I can just connect it to a hub.
Now, how can I get an IP for my laptop withou a hub or wireless connection?

thanks.

right click on my network places\
then click on local area connection\properties\tcpip\properties
and you can put in any ip address you like.
the default ones when no connection is present
are 169.254.*.* and 10.1.*.*
OR
run ipconfig and see what default address
windoze has given u.

but the NIC by default does not hold an IP address after the network cable is unplugged.

Set an IP address to the adapter, plug in a cable. Do the DisableMediaSense registry tweak as said in the thread I linked to in your other thread, and reboot (still with the network cable in). Take out the network cable, and it will thereon give your adapter an IP address.
