Put the eggs in cold water, bring them to a good rolling boil then cover, shut off the heat and let stand until the water cools.

while we're on this topic ... how long does it take to boil a half-done egg? most of the time it went to hard boiled, and they taste "less exciting" :)

A small hint. When you get the egg out of the water plunge it in cold water to aviod green discoloration. Also, if you take a needle and make a small hole in the large end of the egg you will release the air from the air sack and will have a better chance of having a well cooked egg. However when you put the needle in do not go into too deep, you do not want to rupture the memberane around the egg.

best thing to do is go to a book store and check out their cookbook sections... there are some really nice ones with pictures and all... better then going around without a clue:p

start the eggs in boiling water and then turn the heat down to maintain a gendle simmer. once the eggs are cooked, scoop them out into a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking if they are to be served cold. for softboiled eggs, skip the ice water ands eve immediately.

when hard boiled eggs are overcooked, the outside of the yolks turn ugly dark green and the sides are pale and dry.:p

poke a hole with a pin in the rounder end.. lets trapped air escape. 3 minute egg = runny 4 minut egg slightly less, 6 minute firm but gooie middle, 8 min shiny yolk moise center, 10 minute is solid.

Well, if you can use chopsticks, it's easy to tell: if you can pick them up with your chopsticks then they're done (i'm not kidding you).

I may have this backwards, but a good hard-boiled test is to "spin" the egg on the countertop. <corrected-thanks Mwilding> Raw eggs wobble and hard boiled eggs spin. Also, if you hold an egg up to a bright light, you can tell how well done it is. If it glows bright orange then it is raw, very faint light is softboiled, and no light is boiled. You can use this as a test when you are done boiling your eggs.

Oh, and if you want to have some real fun get some friends together after drinking and try cooking a whole egg in the microwave. My roommate literally blew the door off the microwave at a party we had one time.

You have it backwards. A soft boiled egg has a soft inside that moves around and causes the wobbling.

3 minutes for soft boiled
5 minutes for hard boiled

won't do you much good to cook it for any longer.

Yeah you can boil it anywhere from 10-30 mins, it doesn't really make a difference I've discovered.
