HELP hooking up a Linksys WAP 4 port router to an existing network

trueimage

Senior member
I have the Linksys BEFW11S4, 4 port router, WAP, 802.11b
I already had the D-Link DSS-5+ 5 port switch.

I have ADSL which is NATted (i think thats the term?) ... It's a static internal IP... my ips are like 10.173.xxx.xxx

So, I have the ADSL modem into the uplink port on my switch, and then I assign IPs manually & statically to my two boxes.

Thats the current setup. Now to add the WAP/router. I'll refer to the two as the LINKSYS and the DLINK to be clear.

So, I tried to plug in (with the supplied cat 5 cable) from "normal" port 3 on the DLINK into the LINKSYS WAN port (there are ports 1,2,3,4-uplink, WAN on the LINKSYS). On the LINKSYS the following lights are green: Power, WLAN link and WAN link. The WAN Act light is flashing like there is data moving.. not fast but you know...

Ok, so I try to open http://192.168.1.1/ like the linksys setup docs tell me too.. nothing. ping, nothing. So i try the LINKSYS Uplink port, same results. I try a "normal" port on the LINKSYS, no link cuz it isn't a crossover cable.

I have rebooted my PC after hooking everything up, no dice.

I'm stuck.. what can I do? I want to just login to the LINKSYS and set it up to use a static IP like my other boxes, but I can't even get to that.

thanks!

I would take the following approach.

For starter forget about your Internet.

Connect one computer to the Linksys. Set the computer to automatic obtains IP, and establish a connection with the Linksys (If the computer IP is set statically to your external IP it can not communicate with the Linksys). If it does not obtain the IP from the Linksys assign manually an IP that is of the subnet of the Linksys. (like 192.168.1.10).

If you successfully connected, put the Wireless on the other computer and set it. Make sure that you have a functional Wireless LAN.

Once the LAN with the Wireless is working, connect the WAN port to whatever you are using as Internet source, and assign the WAN one of your static IPs.

Have a Good Luck.

do this

cable modem.....wan port linksys router
uplink port linksys....d-link switch

d-link ports.....computers

everything should automatically work.

you will have 3 ports on the linksys router that can support computers
you will have 5 ports available on the d-link
you will have wireless access

this setup is diagrammed here
