I just finished building my first system, and after double checkin all the connections, all the switches, everything, i plugged in the monitor and went to turn on the system. As soon as I pushed the power button, the LEDs in the case came on, the two case fans and CPU fan started running, and everyhting seemed OK. BUT, after only a second or two, everything just quit. Everything stopped powering up, the case and CPU fans stopped, and the lights on the DVD and CDRW drives went out. The LEDs on front of the case are still on though. What happened?!?! I tried unplugging everything except the main power to the mobo, and still, the CPU fan starts up, then stops after like one or two seconds. It's like just as everything starts to power up it turns off. Please, PLEASE someone help. 🙁

P.S.--The system specs:

Antec SX1030B
AMD AThlon 2100+
Chaintech Apogee 7VJL mobo
Lite-on DVD and CDRW
Maxtor 80GB hdd
Teac FDD
Gainward 650XP (GF4 TI4200)
Audigy MP3+

Check and make sure the CPU fan (or any fan as far as that goes) is plugged into the CPU header. Sounds like its running some kind of autoprotect to prevent burnout.

Or its getting hot super fast and going into thermal shutdown. Either way it sounds like some kind of protection is being activated. Check it all over really good.

I'm using the CPU fan/heatsink combo that came bundled with the athlon, so I'm hoping they installed it correctly. (the fan and heatsink that is) I put the heatsink on the processor, but I don't want to take that off and risk ruining the thermal compund. I've double checked everything, but I'll keep looking.

I think Warcon is referring to the "CPU fan header". There are several fan headers on the mobo, usually 3. The CPU fan header is most likely monitored in the bios. If it does not detect the fan's rotation, it can shut the system down as a fail-safe. So, if your fan is plugged into the chasis header, for example, the bios may think there's no cpu cooling and shut down the system.

I checked, and the CPU fan is definitely plugged in the right place. It's in both the maual and right on the mobo. I'm not sure how to check if it's getting overheated too fast. It's barely even on for two seconds. Any other ideas???

**bump**

Sorry, but I really need some ideas here. I tried changing the jumper on the fsb from 133 to 100, and it made a difference in that everything powered up for about a second longer, then it all stopped again. Is it possible the processor is really heating up that fast?? Should I try taking the heatsink off, cleaning it, and putting some new compound on?? Also, the mobo came with a heatsink, but no fan, already installed on the via kt333. But, i read somewhere that there is no thermal compound on. Should I take the heatsink off and put some on?? PLEASE, any ideas.
